Abstract

Kaluza (1921) and Klein (1926) demonstrated that Einstein’s general relativity and Maxwell’s electromagnetism could be unified by extending spacetime from four to five dimensions, with the fifth dimension compactified at an unobservably small radius. The Kaluza–Klein framework was the first successful geometric unification in physics, and it has inspired every subsequent extra-dimension theory, including string theory and M-theory. Yet Kaluza–Klein left a primary question entirely unanswered: what is the physical character of the extra dimension? It introduced the fifth coordinate as a static, compactified geometric axis and assigned it no dynamics. The McGucken Principle — that the fourth coordinate of Minkowski spacetime, $x_4 = ict$, is a genuine physical axis advancing at the invariant rate $dx_4/dt = ic$, as a wavefront whose oscillation carries the quantum of action h, with c the rate of the expansion and ℏ its action per oscillatory step — answers this question. In the McGucken framework, the universe has four dimensions: three spatial dimensions ($x_1, x_2, x_3$) and a fourth geometric dimension $x_4$ that is physically expanding at rate c. Time t, as measured on our clocks and watches — which are all foundationally based on the propagation of photons and are thus “photon clocks” — emerges as the parameter of that expansion: not itself a dimension but the measure of $x_4$’s expansion, inherited from it and often conflated with it but fundamentally distinct. Restated in Kaluza–Klein’s language, the emergent parameter t is the fifth dimension: four genuine dimensions plus the parameter of $x_4$’s expansion is the five-fold accounting that Kaluza and Klein wrote as five dimensions, with their fifth dimension being the parameter t reified as a static coordinate axis. Kaluza and Klein counted five slots correctly; the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ identifies which four are dimensions and which one is the emergent measure of the fourth dimension’s expansion. Einstein never wrote $x_4 = t$; he wrote $x_4 = ict$, a fact whose dynamical consequence Minkowski encoded but no one read for over a century until McGucken. This paper shows that the McGucken Principle naturally encompasses all of the geometric benefits of Kaluza–Klein while resolving its principal deficiency — the static, unexplained extra dimension — and extends the framework into domains Kaluza–Klein cannot reach: the second law of thermodynamics, the arrows of time, quantum nonlocality and entanglement, the Schrödinger equation, the values of the fundamental constants c and h, and Newton’s inverse square law of gravity, all as theorems of the single equation $dx_4/dt = ic$. The completion is carried through in full: the electromagnetic U(1) is constructed on the phase circle of $x_4$’s oscillation — the $x_4$-orientation bundle — with Maxwell’s equations, charge quantisation, exact photon masslessness, and the topological prohibition of monopoles as theorems; the cylinder condition holds as an identity of the accounting, $t = x_4/(ic)$; the Kaluza–Klein radius is identified as the one-tick McGucken Sphere’s radius dressed by the fine-structure constant, $r = (2/\sqrt{\alpha})\,\ell_P$; the complete catalog of Kaluza–Klein’s shortcomings — the radion, the Planck-mass tower, the mass–charge catastrophe, the chirality no-go, the vacuum instabilities, the matter problem, and the century of null experiments — is resolved item by item; and the century’s record of attempts to find the quantum, nonlocality, the Born rule, thermodynamics, the arrows of time, and the light cone in the fifth dimension is read against the theorem chains of the Light Time Dimension Theory corpus, with nonlocality and the Born rule carried by the nonlocal surface of the McGucken Sphere.

I.  Introduction: The Century-Long Search for the Extra Dimension

In 1921, Theodor Kaluza sent Einstein a paper proposing that spacetime has five dimensions rather than four [1]. By extending general relativity to a five-dimensional manifold and requiring that none of the fields depend on the fifth coordinate — the cylinder condition — Kaluza showed that Einstein’s five-dimensional field equations decompose automatically into Einstein’s four-dimensional field equations, Maxwell’s equations of electromagnetism, and a scalar field. Electromagnetism, the oldest known force apart from gravity, emerged from pure geometry. It was the first successful geometric unification in physics.

Klein refined the proposal in 1926 [2], providing a quantum-mechanical interpretation: the fifth dimension is compactified — curled into a circle of radius r — at a scale so small (near the Planck length, $\sim 10^{-35}\ \mathrm{m}$) that it is unobservable at accessible energies. The quantisation of momentum in the compact direction gives rise to a discrete mass spectrum, the lightest modes of which correspond to known particles. Klein’s compactification resolved the observational question — why don’t we see five dimensions? — but it deepened the physical one: what is the fifth dimension, and why is it compactified?

Every major unification programme since Kaluza–Klein has inherited this unanswered question. String theory requires ten or eleven dimensions, all but four of which are compactified by mechanisms that remain poorly understood [3]. M-theory adds an eleventh dimension. Randall–Sundrum models place the extra dimension in a warped bulk [4]. In every case, the extra dimensions are geometric structures whose physical character — why they exist, why they have the topology they do, why they are dynamically inert or compactified rather than large and expanding — is left unaddressed.

The McGucken Principle [5, 6] resolves this impasse, not by adding more dimensions but by recognising the physical character of the one extra dimension that has been present in the equations since 1907. Minkowski’s fourth coordinate $x_4 = ict$, differentiated with respect to t, gives $$dx_4/dt = ic \tag{1}$$

$x_4$ is not static. It is advancing. The rate of its advance is ic — imaginary, because $x_4$ is orthogonal to the spatial dimensions in precisely the sense that the imaginary unit rotates by 90° in the complex plane, and of magnitude c, because the speed of light is the rate at which the fourth geometric axis of the universe expands. In the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework, Kaluza–Klein’s extra dimension is not compactified, not static, and not mysterious. It is $x_4$, and it is moving.

The completion this paper establishes runs across the whole of Kaluza–Klein’s record. §II states the dimensional accounting: Kaluza–Klein’s five slots are the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework’s four dimensions plus the emergent parameter t. §III and §IV state the achievements, the deficiencies, and the physical character of the extra dimension. §V resolves the record item by item: the second law, the arrows of time, the McGucken Equivalence and the nonlocal surface of the Sphere (§V.2–V.4); the Schrödinger equation, the constants c and h, and Newton’s inverse square law (§V.5–V.7); the mass tower, the forced topology, the cylinder-condition identity, the one-tick Sphere with the fine-structure dressing of the Kaluza–Klein radius, and the electromagnetic U(1) on the $x_4$-orientation bundle (§V.8–V.12); the complete catalog of shortcomings, the modern pedagogical case, the century’s attempts to put the quantum, nonlocality, and the Born rule into the fifth dimension, the overall reading, and the record on thermodynamics, the arrows, and the light cone (§V.13–V.17). §VI–§XI and Appendix A carry the time distinction, the comparative position, the conclusion, and the four $x_4$-rate quantities that keep every reading exact.

II.  The Dimensional Accounting: Kaluza–Klein’s Five Dimensions Are McGucken’s Four Dimensions Plus the Emergent Parameter t

II.1  Kaluza–Klein: 4 + 1 Dimensions

Kaluza–Klein spacetime consists of:

  • Three large spatial dimensions: $x_1, x_2, x_3$
  • One time coordinate: t
  • One compact extra spatial dimension: $x_5$, curled at radius $r \sim \ell_{\mathrm{Planck}}$

The fifth dimension is introduced as a static geometric entity. Its physical nature is unspecified beyond its topology (a circle) and its scale. It has no dynamics of its own. It does not change, does not flow, and does not generate any observable effect except through the decomposition of the five-dimensional field equations into four-dimensional ones.

II.2  McGucken: 3 + 1 Dimensions + 1 Emergent Parameter

The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework identifies four dimensions and one emergent parameter in the structure of the universe:

  • Three large spatial dimensions: $x_1, x_2, x_3$ — the three dimensions of ordinary space
  • The fourth geometric dimension: $x_4$ — a genuine physical axis advancing at rate ic per unit of coordinate measure
  • Time t: not a dimension in itself, but the measure of $x_4$’s expansion — the coordinate by which we count how far $x_4$ has advanced

This accounting is not pedantry. It resolves a confusion that has persisted since Einstein formulated special relativity. In standard presentations, time is called the “fourth dimension” and $x_4 = ict$ is treated as a formal encoding of time into the metric. But Einstein never wrote $x_4 = t$. He wrote — or rather, Minkowski wrote on his behalf — $$x_4 = ict \tag{2}$$

These are profoundly different statements. $x_4 = t$ would say that the fourth dimension is time. $x_4 = ict$ says that the fourth dimension is an imaginary multiple of time — that is, a geometric axis orthogonal to the spatial dimensions whose advance at rate c, measured in units of coordinate time t, gives rise to what we experience and measure as time. Time t is the ruler we use to measure $x_4$’s expansion. It is not $x_4$ itself.

This distinction explains why time is so different from space. The three spatial dimensions are large, static, and traversable in both directions. $x_4$ is advancing, unidirectional, and not traversable. Time inherits these properties from $x_4$ because time is the measure of $x_4$’s expansion — it flows in one direction because $x_4$ expands in one direction, and it cannot be reversed because $x_4$ cannot retreat. The arrow of time is not mysterious; it is the arrow of $x_4$.

II.3  The Correspondence with Kaluza–Klein

In Kaluza–Klein, the extra dimension $x_5$ is an additional spatial dimension curled up at the Planck scale. In the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework, the extra dimension $x_4$ is not spatial and not curled: it is advancing, and its advance at rate c is what gives rise to the phenomena that Kaluza–Klein’s extra dimension was introduced to explain. The McGucken Principle does not compete with Kaluza–Klein. It completes it, by providing the physical dynamics that Kaluza and Klein left absent.

Put most directly: Kaluza and Klein knew there was an extra dimension. McGucken knew what it was doing.

The accounting of §II.2 restates Kaluza–Klein’s five dimensions exactly. Kaluza–Klein’s coordinates are $x_1, x_2, x_3$, the fourth coordinate $x_4 = ict$ of the Minkowski sector, and the postulated $x_5$. The accounting of the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework is $x_1, x_2, x_3$, $x_4$, and the emergent parameter t. The first four map onto one another directly, and the fifth slot maps as well: Kaluza–Klein’s fifth dimension is the parameter t restated as a static coordinate axis — the measure of $x_4$’s expansion, reified into a dimension, assigned a topology and a radius, and left with no dynamics because a parameter has no dynamics of its own. Five slots in both accountings; the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ identifies four as dimensions and the fifth as the emergent parameter of the fourth dimension’s expansion. This is why Kaluza–Klein’s fifth dimension had to be assigned its properties by hand: a reified parameter supplies no topology, no scale, and no dynamics, so Klein supplied all three by choice.

The term is used here in a precise sense. A parameter is a measure: a number assigned to a configuration, carrying no extent, no topology, no set of points, and no dynamics of its own. In the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework, t is the parameter of $x_4$’s expansion — the number that registers how far $x_4$ has advanced, read on photon clocks. To reify the parameter as a static coordinate axis is to promote its values into points of a geometric axis and to treat that axis as a dimension of the universe. The promotion transfers none of the properties a genuine dimension possesses, because the parameter had none to transfer. Every property of the promoted axis must therefore be assigned: Kaluza–Klein assigned its topology (the circle), its scale (the radius r), and its dependence rule (the cylinder condition), each by hand, and §V.10 establishes that the third of these assignments holds as an identity of the McGucken accounting rather than as an imposed condition.

III.  What Kaluza–Klein Achieves and Where It Falls Short

III.1  The Achievements

Kaluza–Klein’s principal achievement was the geometric unification of gravity and electromagnetism. By writing the five-dimensional metric as $$\tilde g_{AB} = \begin{pmatrix} g_{\mu\nu} + \kappa^2 A_\mu A_\nu \varphi & \kappa A_\mu \varphi \\ \kappa A_\nu \varphi & \varphi \end{pmatrix} \tag{3}$$

where $g_{\mu\nu}$ is the four-dimensional metric, $A_\mu$ is the electromagnetic four-potential, and φ is a scalar field, the five-dimensional Einstein equations decompose into: the four-dimensional Einstein equations (gravity), the Maxwell equations (electromagnetism), and the Klein–Gordon equation for the scalar field. Three separate theories from one geometric postulate — this was a genuine triumph.

Klein’s quantisation of momentum in the compact direction gives $$p_5 = n\hbar/r, \quad n = 0, \pm 1, \pm 2, \ldots \tag{4}$$

The zero mode n = 0 gives the massless fields of the standard model; higher modes give a Kaluza–Klein tower of massive particles with masses $m_n = n\hbar/(rc)$, which for $r \sim \ell_{\mathrm{Planck}}$ are of order the Planck mass and hence unobservable at current energies. This is the physical basis of the compactification and has inspired all of string theory’s moduli stabilisation mechanisms.

III.2  The Deficiencies

For all its elegance, Kaluza–Klein leaves the following questions unanswered:

  1. Why is the extra dimension compactified? The cylinder condition — that fields do not depend on $x_5$ — is imposed by hand, not derived. Klein’s compactification provides a mechanism but not a reason. Why should one dimension curl and not the others?
  2. What is the physical character of the extra dimension? Is it spatial? Temporal? Something else? Kaluza–Klein assigns it the topology of a circle and gives it no dynamics. It does not advance, oscillate, expand, or do anything. It simply is.
  3. The second law of thermodynamics. Kaluza–Klein has nothing to say about entropy, irreversibility, or the arrow of time. These are not geometric in the Kaluza–Klein framework.
  4. Quantum mechanics. Kaluza–Klein provides a mass spectrum but does not derive the Schrödinger equation, explain quantum nonlocality, or supply a mechanism for entanglement.
  5. The fundamental constants. c and h enter the Kaluza–Klein framework as inputs. Their values are not explained by the geometry.
  6. The scalar field problem. The Kaluza–Klein decomposition automatically produces a massless scalar field (the “radion”) mediating a fifth force with gravitational strength. This field has not been observed. Its absence is a persistent empirical difficulty.
  7. The mass problem of the charged modes. The Kaluza–Klein tower of equation (4) assigns every mode of nonzero n the mass $m_n = n\hbar/(rc)$. For r near the Planck length this is the Planck mass, $m_P = \sqrt{\hbar c/G} \approx 1.22 \times 10^{19}\ \mathrm{GeV}/c^2$. Charge in Kaluza–Klein is the mode number, so every charged particle must occupy a nonzero mode: the electron, carrying charge − e, sits at n = −1 and is predicted at the Planck mass. The measured electron mass is $0.511\ \mathrm{MeV}/c^2$ — an error of twenty-two orders of magnitude. Klein’s construction quantises charge at the price of misplacing the mass of every charged particle in nature, and the two cannot be separated within Kaluza–Klein, because both are the single integer n.

The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ addresses all seven.

III.3  The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ Reading of Klein’s 1926 Hope: The Origin of Planck’s Constant in the Extra Dimension

The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ states the physical reality that the fourth dimension $x_4$ is expanding at the rate c from every spacetime point, and equation (10) of §V.6 states what the Principle asserts about the constant of action: h is the quantum of action of that expansion’s oscillation. What $dx_4/dt = ic$ predicts about the historical record is therefore specific — if the constant of action belongs to the dynamics of the extra dimension, the founder who took the extra dimension most seriously should have been drawn toward exactly that hope. He was. Klein closed his 1926 note in Nature — “The Atomicity of Electricity as a Quantum Theory Law” [22] — with the following speculation:

“In a former paper the writer has shown that the differential equation underlying the new quantum mechanics of Schrödinger can be derived from a wave equation of a five-dimensional space, in which h does not appear originally, but is introduced in connection with the periodicity in $x_5$. Although incomplete, this result, together with the considerations given here, suggests that the origin of Planck’s quantum may be sought just in this periodicity in the fifth dimension.”

In the same note Klein computed the period of the fifth dimension from the electron charge, $L = (hc/e)\sqrt{16\pi G} = 0.8 \times 10^{-30}\ \mathrm{cm}$, and remarked that “the small value of this length together with the periodicity in the fifth dimension may perhaps be taken as a support of the theory of Kaluza in the sense that they may explain the non-appearance of the fifth dimension in ordinary experiments as the result of averaging over the fifth dimension.” (Both quotations from Klein’s Nature note, reprinted in English translation in Appelquist–Chodos–Freund [23] and quoted in O’Raifeartaigh–Straumann [24].)

Klein’s criterion, itemised from his own sentence, has two clauses: (K1) the fundamental equation should be one “in which h does not appear originally,” and (K2) the constant of action should enter through the intrinsic dynamics of the extra dimension — for Klein, “the periodicity in $x_5$.” The programme did not close on Klein’s own terms, and the reason is visible in his construction: the five-dimensional wave field of the Zeitschrift für Physik paper is written $U = \exp(i\hbar^{-1}\Phi)$ [24], so the wave ansatz carries ℏ before the periodicity acts on anything. The periodicity converts a continuous fifth-dimensional momentum into the ladder $p_5 = nh/L$; the quantum of action itself enters with the assumed wave. Clause (K1) is unmet in Kaluza–Klein: h appears originally.

The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ is the closure of Klein’s hope, in the corrected location. The extra dimension is $x_4$, the fourth dimension that has stood in the equations since Minkowski wrote $x_4 = ict$; its expansion at rate c is a wavefront, and h is the action accumulated per oscillatory cycle of that expansion (§V.6, equation (10)). Clause (K1) is met: the founding statement $dx_4/dt = ic$ contains c and i and no h, and the action quantum arises with the oscillation of the advance rather than with an imported wave ansatz. Clause (K2) is met in exactly Klein’s intended sense: the constant of action belongs to the intrinsic dynamics of the extra dimension — the oscillatory expansion of $x_4$ — with the boundary between what is entailed and what is measured stated precisely in §V.6. Klein sought the origin of Planck’s constant in the periodicity of a postulated fifth spatial circle; the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ locates it in the oscillation of the fourth dimension’s physical expansion, the dimension Klein’s generation already possessed.

III.4  The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ Reading of the Abandonment of Kaluza–Klein: Five Waves of Failure and Their Resolution

The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ states the physical reality that the fourth dimension $x_4$ is expanding at the rate c from every spacetime point, and it predicts a specific pattern in the historical record of Kaluza–Klein: every failure of the programme should trace to the extra dimension being a static, hand-tuned input — free topology, free radius, no dynamics — so that each observational conflict could only be patched by another choice, never resolved by the theory. The record shows exactly that pattern, in five waves.

Wave 1 (1926–1930): displaced by quantum mechanics. Klein published in the same eighteen months in which Heisenberg, Schrödinger, and Dirac built quantum mechanics. Klein’s own hope — the Nature speculation of §III.3 — was that the fifth dimension would explain the quantum; instead quantum mechanics succeeded on its own terms with no extra dimension anywhere in it, and Klein himself moved on to the Klein–Gordon equation and quantum field theory. The one arena in which the fifth dimension promised new physics was claimed by a rival that worked. The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ reading: the rival is itself downstream of the Principle — the Schrödinger equation is a theorem of $dx_4/dt = ic$ (§V.5), so the physics that displaced Kaluza–Klein descends from the dynamics of the dimension Kaluza–Klein left static.

Wave 2: the Planck-mass tower. Deficiency 7 of §III.2 — every charged mode at $m_n = n\hbar/(rc)$, the electron predicted twenty-two orders of magnitude too heavy. The theory’s one quantitative prediction beyond the Einstein and Maxwell equations it reassembled was a mass spectrum, and the spectrum was wrong. The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ reading is §V.8: the rate is legislated for every object, no rung index exists, and the Compton frequency $f_\tau = mc^2/h$ reads the observed mass.

Wave 3: the scalar that could be neither kept nor removed. The fifteenth component of the five-dimensional metric is a massless scalar — the radion — coupling with gravitational strength, a fifth force nobody observes. Setting φ constant by hand is inconsistent: the scalar’s own field equation then forces $F^2 = 0$, removing the electromagnetism the theory was built to produce (Thiry 1948 [29]). The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ reading: the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework has four dimensions, so the decomposition 15 = 10 + 4 + 1 never arises — there is no fifth metric row to supply a radion, and no radius to breathe. The metric is the squared rate of the Sphere’s expansion, and the scalar problem is absent at the level of the dimensional accounting of §II.2.

Wave 4 (1930s–1940s): Einstein’s exit; (1950s–1970s): the wrong gauge group. Einstein worked on variants for two decades, including the 1938 Einstein–Bergmann paper treating the fifth dimension as physically real [30], and set the programme aside: it yielded no physics beyond the two theories it glued together. Then the weak and strong interactions arrived, and a circle yields only U(1); non-abelian generalisations required larger compact spaces with more hand-chosen topology, while the Standard Model succeeded through internal gauge symmetry with no dimensions added. The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ reading is §V.9 together with §V.6: the phase descends from the i in $dx_4/dt = ic$ rather than from a chosen topology, and the gauge sector belongs to the Standard Model gauge group sector of the Light Time Dimension Theory corpus.

Wave 5 (1981): the chirality no-go. The supergravity-driven revival of the 1980s was closed by Witten’s theorem [31]: compactification of pure higher-dimensional gravity on a smooth manifold cannot produce the chiral fermions of the Standard Model — left-handed and right-handed particles coupling differently, which is the observed form of the weak interaction. String theory absorbed the result by adding gauge fields in the higher dimensions by hand, which surrenders the original Kaluza–Klein claim that geometry alone suffices. The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ reading: the no-go binds theories that produce four-dimensional physics by reduction from higher dimensions. The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework compactifies nothing and reduces nothing — the hypotheses of the theorem are unmet — and the corpus grounds spin in the Sphere’s SO(3) symmetry and its SU(2) double cover, with spin, Pauli exclusion, and symmetrisation forced consequences of i as the perpendicularity marker [25].

IV.  The McGucken Principle: The Physical Character of the Extra Dimension

IV.1  The Postulate

The McGucken Principle [5, 6] is obtained by differentiating Minkowski’s own equation $x_4 = ict$ with respect to coordinate time t: $$dx_4/dt = ic \tag{5}$$

This is not a new equation. It follows from a one-line differentiation of Minkowski’s 1907 notation. What is new is reading it as a physical statement: $x_4$ is a genuine geometric axis that is physically advancing at the fixed imaginary rate ic per unit of coordinate time. The written record of that reading begins in an appendix to the author’s 1998 doctoral dissertation at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill [48], where time appears as an emergent phenomenon arising from a fourth dimension expanding at the velocity of light, with the public archival record established through five FQXi essay-contest papers across 2008–2013 [49, 50, 51, 52, 53] and their collected abstracts [54]. This rate is invariant — it does not depend on position, on the presence of matter, or on the state of motion of any observer.

IV.2  The Master Equation

From equation (5), the four-velocity norm follows directly. Every object moves through the four-dimensional manifold, and the geometry of a space in which $x_4$ advances at ic constrains the magnitude of the four-velocity to be fixed [5]: $$u^\mu u_\mu = -c^2 \tag{6}$$

Every object’s total four-speed is the universal constant c. The four-speed budget is partitioned between spatial motion and advance along $x_4$: $$(dx/dt)^2 + (dy/dt)^2 + (dz/dt)^2 + (dx_4/dt)^2 = c^2 \tag{7}$$

A particle at rest in three-dimensional space directs its entire four-speed budget into $x_4$. As spatial velocity v increases, more budget is redirected spatially and less remains for $x_4$. At v = c — the photon — the $x_4$ component is exactly zero: photons do not advance along $x_4$ at all. They ride $x_4$’s expansion as a surfer rides a wave, stationary relative to it, advancing at its velocity. This is why photons are the perfect probes of spacetime geometry and why the speed of light is the invariant around which all of relativity is built.

IV.3  Why the Extra Dimension is Not Compactified

In Kaluza–Klein, the extra dimension must be compactified to explain why we do not observe it directly. In the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework, no compactification is needed, for three reasons.

First, $x_4$ is not a spatial dimension in the ordinary sense. It is imaginary — $x_4 = ict$ — which means it is orthogonal to the three spatial dimensions not merely geometrically but in the complex-plane sense. We cannot “travel” along $x_4$ by redirecting our spatial motion, because $x_4$’s advance is already accounted for in the four-speed budget. Every object is already moving along $x_4$ at whatever rate its remaining four-speed budget allows after spatial motion is subtracted.

Second, $x_4$ is not static. It is advancing. A dimension that is advancing is not one we can explore by moving along it; it is one that carries us with it, whether we choose to or not. We observe its effects in every passing second, every ticking clock, every irreversible process.

Third, $x_4$’s “size” at any moment is $ct$ — the distance light has traveled since the beginning of the universe, roughly $4.4 \times 10^{26}\ \mathrm{m}$. This is not small. It is the largest scale in the observable universe. The McGucken extra dimension is not compactified to the Planck scale; it is the largest dimension there is. We do not fail to observe it because it is too small; we fail to identify it because we have confused it with time.

V.  How the McGucken Principle Resolves Kaluza–Klein’s Deficiencies

V.1  Why the Extra Dimension Has the Character It Has

Kaluza–Klein introduces the extra dimension and at once asks: why is it compactified? The McGucken Principle makes this question unnecessary. The extra dimension $x_4$ is not compactified because it is not a spatial dimension requiring containment. It is an advancing geometric axis, and its imaginary character ($x_4 = ict$) is what explains everything that seemed paradoxical about it: why it appears “smaller” than the spatial dimensions (it is orthogonal to them in the imaginary sense), why motion through it is universal and compulsory (every object advances along $x_4$ at rate c minus whatever spatial speed it has), and why its effects are everywhere (every physical process, every clock, every entropic change reflects $x_4$’s advance).

V.2  The Second Law of Thermodynamics as a Theorem of $dx_4/dt = ic$

Kaluza–Klein has no connection to thermodynamics. The McGucken Principle derives the second law as a geometric necessity [5, 6]. Because $x_4$ expands spherically and isotropically — $dx_4/dt = ic$ contains no preferred spatial direction — the spatial projection of each particle’s $x_4$-driven displacement is isotropic at each moment — the coupling of matter to the expansion being the Compton coupling of equation (10), each particle riding the oscillatory expansion at its Compton frequency $\omega_C = mc^2/\hbar$, with the particle-level mechanism derived in the corpus [5, 25, 47]. Applied iteratively, this is precisely Brownian motion. The central limit theorem then yields a Gaussian spreading of any particle ensemble, with entropy $$dS/dt = (3/2)\,k_B/t > 0 \quad \text{for all } t > 0 \tag{8}$$

This is not probably positive — it is necessarily positive. Entropy cannot decrease because $x_4$ cannot retreat. The second law is the geometric inevitability of $x_4$’s forward advance, expressed in the three-dimensional language of statistical mechanics.

V.3  The Arrows of Time from a Single Source

Physics recognises five temporal asymmetries, all pointing in the same direction, none explained by the time-symmetric fundamental laws of mechanics or electromagnetism:

  • Thermodynamic arrow: entropy increases toward the future
  • Radiative arrow: radiation expands outward from sources, never converges
  • Causal arrow: causes precede their effects
  • Cosmological arrow: the universe expands
  • Psychological arrow: we remember the past, not the future

Standard physics has no unified explanation for why all five point in the same direction. The McGucken Principle derives all five from the single geometric fact that $x_4$ expands in one direction, irreversibly, at rate c [5]:

The thermodynamic arrow is equation (8): entropy necessarily increases in the direction of $x_4$’s advance because the isotropic, irreversible spreading of $x_4$ is a one-way process.

The radiative arrow follows because the retarded Green’s function of the wave equation — which describes outward-expanding spherical radiation — is the forward-time solution, and forward time is the direction of $x_4$’s advance. The advanced (inward-converging) solution would require $x_4$ to retreat, which it cannot.

The causal arrow is the statement that causal influence propagates only into the forward light cone — the McGucken Sphere of radius ct expanding from any event. Causation follows $x_4$’s expansion.

The cosmological arrow is the large-scale collective manifestation of every particle’s forced advance along $x_4$. The universe expands because $x_4$ expands.

The psychological arrow follows from the causal arrow: memory is the physical record of events that have passed through the forward light cone. We remember the past because causation flows forward.

Kaluza–Klein explains none of these. The McGucken Principle explains all five from a single equation.

V.4  Quantum Nonlocality, Entanglement, and the McGucken Equivalence

Kaluza–Klein does not address quantum nonlocality or entanglement. The McGucken Principle identifies the mechanism [5, 73]. Photons travel at v = c, so by the master equation (6), dτ = 0 along every photon worldline, and by the four-speed budget (7) the photon’s entire budget is spatial: the $x_4$-component of the photon’s worldline velocity is exactly zero, $v_{x_4} = 0$ — Absolute rest in $x_4$. Photons do not advance along $x_4$ from emission to absorption, regardless of the spatial distance they travel, while $dx_4/dt = ic$ continues to hold at every event of the worldline as the expansion rate of the fourth dimension itself.

Two photons created at a common event therefore share an $x_4$ coordinate at creation, and neither advances in $x_4$ thereafter. Their $x_4$ coordinates remain identical at all later times regardless of their spatial separation. The four-dimensional interval from the common event to each photon is always zero: $$ds^2 = \lvert\Delta \mathbf{x}\rvert^2 – c^2\,\Delta t^2 = 0 \tag{9}$$

Equation (9) is the null interval measured from the common emission event to each photon: $\lvert\Delta \mathbf{x}\rvert$ is the spatial distance each photon has traveled and $\Delta t$ the time since emission, and the interval vanishes photon by photon. Between the two photons themselves the coincidence is sharper still: since neither advances in $x_4$, their $x_4$ separation is exactly zero at all times, $\Delta x_4 = 0$.

This is the McGucken Equivalence [5]: quantum nonlocality is the three-dimensional shadow of four-dimensional $x_4$-coincidence. The particles were never separated in the dimension that matters for their correlation. There is no signal passing between them, no violation of relativistic causality. Their spatial separation is real; their $x_4$ separation is always null. The “spooky action at a distance” that troubled Einstein is not action at a distance in four-dimensional spacetime; it is local coincidence in $x_4$, appearing nonlocal only when projected onto three spatial dimensions.

The historical record confirms that Kaluza–Klein never presented a method for nonlocality, and could not have. Kaluza’s 1921 paper [1, 37] is classical field unification throughout — the metric split of equation (3), the cylinder condition, the Maxwell and Einstein sectors — and its single remark on quantum theory treats the quantum as a danger rather than a domain: “what threatens all the ansatz which demand universal validity is the sphinx of modern physics – quantum theory” [37]. Klein’s 1926 papers [2, 22] engage quantum theory as wave mechanics — the five-dimensional wave equation, the charge ladder, the periodicity speculation of §III.3 — and carry nothing on correlations between separated systems. Nothing of the kind existed to be addressed: the Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen argument is 1935 [38], Schrödinger named entanglement in the same year [39], and Bell’s theorem is 1964 (Bell, J. S., Physics 1, 195, 1964 — reference list). Quantum nonlocality entered physics nine years after Klein’s papers and fourteen after Kaluza’s.

The deeper statement is that the Kaluza–Klein geometry could not supply a nonlocality mechanism even retroactively. The Kaluza–Klein spacetime is the metric product $M^{(4)} \times S^1$ of §V.10: the fiber is attached pointwise to the base, motion around the circle displaces nothing in the base, and the spacetime interval between two spacelike-separated events is never shortened by the fiber — every field on the product propagates causally, exactly as on $M^{(4)}$ alone. (The “shortcut through the bulk” constructions of the braneworld literature require warped, non-product metrics of the Randall–Sundrum type [4] and lie outside Kaluza–Klein proper; and a shortcut is in any case a faster causal signal, which is the opposite of what Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen correlations are.) The reified-parameter reading of §II.3 states why the failure is unrepairable: a reified static axis supplies no selective coincidence. Under the cylinder condition, everything in Kaluza–Klein sits at “the same $x_5$ ” identically — a universal sameness that holds for every pair of systems equally and therefore distinguishes an entangled pair from an unentangled one in no way at all. A correlation requires a geometric fact that holds for the correlated pair and fails for others, and a dimension with no dynamics has no such fact to offer.

The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ states the physical reality that the fourth dimension $x_4$ is expanding at the rate c from every spacetime point, as a wavefront whose oscillation carries the quantum of action — c the rate of the expansion, ℏ its action per oscillatory step — and that dynamics is exactly what makes the coincidence of this subsection selective rather than trivial. Massive particles advance in $x_4$ (a particle at spatial rest advances at the full rate); photons are at Absolute rest in $x_4$ ($v_{x_4} = 0$). The statement $\Delta x_4 = 0$ is therefore a special geometric fact about null pairs sourced at a common event, distinguishing them from every massive pair and from null pairs of separate origin. Kaluza–Klein’s fifth slot holds everything at the same value and selects nothing; the fourth dimension of the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework moves, and its motion is what gives the correlation a geometric carrier. A dimension with dynamics can host a physically selective coincidence; a reified static axis cannot.

The nonlocal surface. The geometric carrier of the McGucken Equivalence can be stated as a single object: the surface of the McGucken Sphere. The Sphere sourced at an event is the expanding wavefront itself, and its surface at coordinate time t — the set of points at spatial distance ct from the sourcing event — is one connected geometric object of arbitrary spatial extent whose points stand in exact $x_4$-coincidence: every point of the surface carries the same coordinate value $x_4 = ict$, every point is reached from the sourcing event along a null generator with zero accumulated advance ($X_4 = 0$, the quantity (R4) of Appendix A), and every pair of points on the surface therefore sits at $\Delta x_4 = 0$ at every spatial separation up to the full diameter 2ct. The surface of the Sphere is in this exact sense a nonlocal surface: spatially extended without bound, yet everywhere at vanishing separation in the dimension that carries the correlation. The entangled pair of this subsection is two points of one such surface — worked example A.5.6 of Appendix A computes the coincidence in both registers — and the corpus places the Born rule on the same object: the five convergent derivations of the Born rule proceed from the geometry of the Sphere [47], with the Born geometry and the measurement resolution at [25], so the same surface carries both the correlation and its statistics.

V.5  The Schrödinger Equation as a Theorem

Kaluza–Klein derives a mass spectrum from the quantisation of momentum in the compact direction but does not derive the Schrödinger equation. The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework derives it as a theorem [5, 6]. The derivation chain is:

$dx_4/dt = ic$

↓

$u^\mu u_\mu = -c^2$  (master equation)

↓

$p^\mu p_\mu = -m^2 c^2$  (four-momentum norm)

↓

$E^2 = \lvert\mathbf{p}\rvert^2 c^2 + m^2 c^4$ (energy-momentum relation)

↓

Canonical quantisation: $p_\mu \to i\hbar\partial_\mu$ ⇒  Klein–Gordon equation

↓

Non-relativistic limit ($v \ll c$)

↓

$i\hbar\,\partial\psi/\partial t = -(\hbar^2/2m)\nabla^2\psi + V\psi$  (Schrödinger equation)

Every step is a mathematical consequence, with the division of labour stated exactly: the first step, from the Principle to the master equation (6), is the corpus derivation [5]; the steps from (6) through canonical quantisation to the Schrödinger equation are the standard textbook chain; and the framework’s claims are the first step together with the identification of the i. The imaginary unit i in front of ∂/∂ t in the Schrödinger equation is not a formal device: it is the i in $dx_4/dt = ic$, propagated through the chain into the wave equation. It was always there, in the geometry of $x_4$.

V.6  The Fundamental Constants c and h

Kaluza–Klein takes c and h as inputs. The McGucken Principle derives both [6]:

The speed of light c is the rate of $x_4$’s expansion. The invariance of c across all inertial frames is not an empirical postulate; it is a geometric theorem. An object cannot travel faster than c for the same reason a right triangle cannot have a hypotenuse shorter than either leg: it would require a negative contribution to the four-speed budget (7), which the geometry forbids.

Planck’s constant h is the quantum of action associated with one oscillation of $x_4$ at its fundamental Planck frequency $f_P = \sqrt{c^5/\hbar G}$ [6]. Every particle of mass m couples to $x_4$’s oscillatory expansion at its Compton frequency $$f_\tau = mc^2/h \tag{10}$$

which is a sub-harmonic of the Planck frequency scaled by the ratio $m/m_P$. Mass, in this framework, is the ratio of a particle’s coupling frequency to $x_4$’s fundamental oscillation frequency. Inertia is the resistance to being carried by $x_4$ at a rate different from c. Both constants are shadows of $dx_4/dt = ic$: c from the rate of expansion, h from the quantum of that expansion at the Planck scale.

Bohr named the two constants and the two entry points. In “Causality and Complementarity” (Philosophy of Science 4(3), 1937, p. 292; from his 1936 Copenhagen address to the Second International Congress for the Unity of Science), Niels Bohr observed that the two fundamental constants, the velocity of light and the quantum of action, “are introduced into the formalism as factors of √−1, the one in the definition of the fourth coordinate, the other in the commutation laws of canonically conjugate variables” [21]. Bohr thus recorded the two places with complete precision: c enters physics through the imaginary fourth coordinate $x_4 = ict$, and h enters through the commutator $[\hat q, \hat p] = i\hbar$. He recorded the shared √−1 as a formal fact common to relativity and quantum mechanics, restated the observation in his 1938 Warsaw lecture and again in his 1949 Einstein-Festschrift essay, and gave no common origin for it. The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ supplies the origin: the shared i is the perpendicularity of the one advancing fourth dimension, c its rate of advance, and ℏ its action per oscillatory step. The commutator fails to vanish because q̂ reports a location in the three spatial dimensions while p̂ generates advance along the perpendicular fourth; the two operators are projections of one perpendicular expansion, and i ℏ measures that perpendicularity and its action quantum [25]. Bohr saw the pairing in 1937; the pairing is equation (5) and equation (10) of the present paper read together.

The rigorous boundary between what the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ derives about h and what remains empirical is stated in the corpus [25]. The clause of the Principle that $x_4$ expands in a spherically symmetric manner at velocity c from every event is, read precisely, the statement that $x_4$ expands as a wavefront. A wavefront is an oscillatory object: the surface of constant phase of an oscillation. To call the $x_4$-advance a wavefront is therefore to commit to its carrying a wavelength, a frequency, a phase, and an action — a phase accumulated per oscillatory cycle, the quantity $\exp(iS/\hbar)$ records. On this reading c and ℏ are twin properties of the one advance: c is the rate of the wavefront, ℏ is the action accumulated per oscillatory cycle. The wavefront reading entails that there is a wavelength, that there is a frequency, and that there is an action-per-cycle; it does not by itself fix their numerical values. That the action-per-cycle takes the value ℏ is the empirical anchor — the measured value of Planck’s constant; that the frequency of a massive particle’s wavefront is the Compton frequency $\omega_C = mc^2/\hbar = 2\pi f_\tau$ specifically is fixed by the mass-shell normalisation relating rest energy to oscillation frequency. The existence of the oscillatory action structure is a theorem of $dx_4/dt = ic$ read as wavefront expansion; the scale-setting number is the single external input. This is the precise sense in which equation (10) stands: the quantum of action belongs to the expansion, and its measured magnitude calibrates the theory to the world.

The two constants of the expansion reach the constant of charge. The electron charge satisfies $$e^2 = \alpha\hbar c \tag{12}$$

in Gaussian units (the SI statement inserts the $4\pi\varepsilon_0$ convention), with α the fine-structure constant, dimensionless, $\alpha \approx 1/137.036$. Both dimensional anchors of e are properties of the one expansion — c its rate, ℏ its action per oscillatory cycle — so the constancy of the electron charge reduces to the constancy of a single dimensionless number. Observation supports that constancy tightly: the isotope ratios of the Oklo natural fission reactor bound any drift of α at the level of one part in $10^{17}$ per year [26], with quasar absorption spectra probing α over cosmological lookback times at comparable sensitivity [27]. Conservation of charge is the Noether current of the U(1) phase symmetry, and the phase throughout physics descends from the i in $dx_4/dt = ic$ [28]; on the Noether-inversion reading of the Light Time Dimension Theory corpus, conservation of charge is a theorem of the same expansion that fixes c and ℏ. Quantisation of charge — the integer ladder e /3, e, 2 e — is a further fact that the two constants alone do not reach: Kaluza–Klein purchased the ladder with the circle at the price of the Planck-mass tower (deficiency 7 of §III.2), and in the Light Time Dimension Theory corpus the ladder belongs to the Standard Model gauge group sector. The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ therefore supplies both dimensional constants of charge and its conservation law, reduces the constancy of e to the constancy of α, and locates quantisation in the gauge sector rather than in a wrapping integer.

V.7  Newton’s Inverse Square Law

Kaluza–Klein reproduces Newtonian gravity through the zero-mode of the five-dimensional metric but does not provide a physical mechanism for the inverse square law. The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework derives it as follows [7]. Mass stretches the three spatial dimensions in its vicinity, encoded in the weak-field Schwarzschild metric. The invariant expansion of $x_4$ must bridge more proper spatial distance near the mass, slowing all clocks and generating a clock-rate gradient equal to the Newtonian potential $\Phi = -GM/r$. The Principle of Least Action (itself a theorem of $dx_4/dt = ic$, with inertial mass, Newton’s laws, the equivalence principle, and the geodesic principle derived as a chain of theorems in the corpus Inertia paper [72]) then requires a free particle to follow the geodesic of maximal proper time, deflecting it toward the mass. The inverse square form follows from Gauss’s theorem applied to the McGucken Sphere: $$\lvert\mathbf{g}\rvert \cdot 4\pi r^2 = 4\pi G M \;\Rightarrow\; \lvert\mathbf{g}\rvert = GM/r^2 \tag{11}$$

The $1/r^2$ dependence is the geometric consequence of a conserved flux distributed over the spherical surface of the McGucken Sphere — three-dimensional because there are exactly three spatial dimensions perpendicular to $x_4$.

V.8  The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ Reading of the Kaluza–Klein Mass Tower

The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ states the physical reality that the fourth dimension $x_4$ is expanding at the rate c from every spacetime point — for every object, at every event, with no residual freedom in the rate. That universality is why the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework carries no tower. In Kaluza–Klein, motion along $x_5$ is a free degree of freedom: a field can depend on $x_5$ in infinitely many ways, Fourier-decomposed as $\exp(inx_5/r)$, and each mode’s fifth-dimensional momentum $p_5 = n\hbar/r$ masquerades as four-dimensional mass through the five-dimensional dispersion relation, $m_n = n\hbar/(rc)$. The tower is the statement that the extra dimension adds configuration space — an independent direction in which excitations stack, one predicted particle per integer, with every charged mode at the Planck mass (deficiency 7 of §III.2).

Under the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ the $x_4$-rate is fixed by the Principle itself, and the four-speed budget (7) closes the accounting: given a particle’s spatial velocity, its $x_4$-advance is fully determined. There is no residual $x_4$ quantum number for a spectrum to run over. Kaluza–Klein’s $x_5$ adds states; $x_4$ under the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ constrains states. A dimension whose rate is legislated for every object carries no ladder, because a ladder requires a rung index that objects are free to differ in.

What replaces the mode number is the Compton frequency of equation (10): $f_\tau = mc^2/h$, equivalently the Compton angular frequency $\omega_C = mc^2/\hbar = 2\pi f_\tau$, each particle a sub-harmonic of the Planck frequency scaled by $m/m_P$. In Kaluza–Klein the geometric integer n generates a predicted spectrum $m_n = n\hbar/(rc)$, independent of observation and refuted by it. In the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework the $x_4$-frequency is the observed mass — one particle, one frequency, with no predicted phantom copies at higher rungs. The geometry reads the mass spectrum of nature; Kaluza–Klein’s geometry legislated a spectrum nature refutes.

The division of labour that results is stated plainly. Kaluza–Klein’s tower was simultaneously its false mass spectrum and its charge-quantisation mechanism, because both were the single integer n. Setting the tower aside removes the false spectrum and removes that mechanism with it. In the Light Time Dimension Theory corpus, charge quantisation belongs to the Standard Model gauge group sector, and §V.6 states what the two constants of the expansion supply for charge: its dimensional anchors through equation (12), its conservation through the U(1) phase descending from the i in $dx_4/dt = ic$, and the reduction of its constancy to the constancy of α.

V.9  The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ Reading of the Circle: Topology Chosen versus Geometry Forced

The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ states the physical reality that the fourth dimension $x_4$ is expanding at the rate c from every spacetime point, in a spherically symmetric manner — and the spherical symmetry is compelled rather than chosen. This subsection states the contrast with Kaluza–Klein’s topology precisely, because the two frameworks stand at opposite poles of the same question: where does the geometry of the extra dimension come from?

In Kaluza–Klein the topology is an input, selected to yield a known answer. Klein’s ansatz is $M^{(5)} = M^{(4)} \times U(1)$, the circle group: the isometry group of the compact dimension becomes the gauge group of the projected four-dimensional physics, and the circle is chosen because electromagnetism’s gauge group is U(1) — a one-parameter phase symmetry, and a circle is the geometry whose symmetry is a one-parameter phase. Nothing in the five-dimensional Einstein equations selects the circle over the infinite line: both solve the equations, and the equations are silent on compactness, on topology, and on radius. Observation forces smallness; the desired gauge group forces the circle; the electron charge forces the radius. Three inputs, each fitted to the answer sought.

Under the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ no topology is free to choose. The corpus states the forcing argument as follows [25]: the advance of $x_4$ cannot select any particular spatial direction, “because nothing in ‘ $x_4$ expands relative to $x_1 x_2 x_3$’ privileges one spatial direction over another: $x_4$ is perpendicular to all three spatial axes equally, which is exactly what the marker i records, and a perpendicularity that is symmetric across $x_1, x_2, x_3$ supplies no basis on which to prefer x̂ over ŷ over ẑ. An expansion with no preferred spatial direction is isotropic; the unique isotropic spatial profile is the sphere.” The expansion of $x_4$ is therefore spherically symmetric of necessity — the McGucken Sphere — by the same form of argument through which the Cosmological Principle forces the isotropy of the Friedmann–Lemaître–Robertson–Walker metric. Kaluza–Klein selected its geometry by hand to yield the known symmetry; the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ has its geometry compelled by the perpendicularity of $x_4$ to the spatial three.

The phase itself follows the same pattern. Kaluza–Klein obtains the U(1) phase from the assumed topology: the phase lives on the circle, and the circle was put there to carry it. In the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework the phase lives in the rate: the i in $dx_4/dt = ic$ is the perpendicularity marker of $x_4$, and the corpus establishes that the imaginary unit throughout quantum physics — the Schrödinger i, the canonical commutator $[\hat q, \hat p] = i\hbar$, the path-integral weight $\exp(iS/\hbar)$, the complex wave function itself — descends from this one geometric i [28]. The U(1) phase that Kaluza–Klein obtains from an assumed compact shape is, under the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$, a theorem of the rate’s imaginary unit. The circle was the engineering; the i is the physics.

V.10  The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ Reading of the Circle, the Cylinder, and the Absent Sphere

The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ states the physical reality that the fourth dimension $x_4$ is expanding at the rate c from every spacetime point, in a spherically symmetric manner — so the framework’s compact object at every event is a sphere, the McGucken Sphere, whose fixed- t cross-section (the equal-time surface of the expanding wavefront) is a two-sphere S² carrying the rotation group SO(3). Kaluza–Klein’s compact object at every event is a circle S¹ carrying U(1). This subsection states precisely why Kaluza–Klein’s geometry contains circles and a cylinder and no sphere, and what relation the circle bears to the Sphere of the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework.

Why the circle: dimension counting. Kaluza added exactly one dimension, and the only compact connected one-dimensional manifold is the circle S¹. A sphere S² is a two-dimensional surface: compactification on S² requires two added dimensions. Once the addition was fixed at one, the circle was the entire menu of compact topologies. The addition was fixed at one because the budget was set by the target: one added dimension contributes exactly the four off-diagonal metric components $g_{\mu 5}$ of equation (3) — exactly one four-vector field $A_\mu$ — exactly one gauge field, and electromagnetism, the single force to be geometrised in 1921, requires exactly one. Compactification on S² would contribute three gauge fields, one for each generator of the SO(3) isometry of the sphere — a non-abelian Yang–Mills structure that entered physics only in 1954 [32]. When larger gauge groups were later required, the Kaluza–Klein tradition purchased them the same way, by adding as many dimensions as the desired isometry group demanded — the S⁷ compactification of eleven-dimensional supergravity being the developed case [33, 34] — each compact space hand-chosen for the symmetry sought.

Why the cylinder. The Kaluza–Klein spacetime is the product manifold $M^{(4)} \times S^1$: four-dimensional spacetime with the circle attached at every event. “Cylinder” names this product topology — an extended base crossed with a circle — and the physics lives on the product, which is the whole of the space. The cylinder condition is the statement $\partial g_{AB}/\partial x_5 = 0$: no component of the metric, and in the full treatment no field, varies along the fiber direction. Kaluza imposed the condition by hand in 1921. Klein converted the imposition into an energetic enforcement in 1926: on a circle of radius r, dependence on $x_5$ is carried by the modes $\exp(inx_5/r)$ of equation (4), whose excitation energies are $n\hbar c/r$; for r near the Planck length the first excited mode costs Planck-scale energy, so at all accessible energies the fields are frozen into the n = 0 sector and the condition holds automatically. The circle and the cylinder are one construction at two levels: the circle is the fiber at a single event, the cylinder is the spacetime with that fiber attached everywhere.

The circle inside the Sphere. Two standard facts relate S¹ to S² (background geometry). First, every plane section of a sphere is a circle, and sections through the centre are great circles. Second, on the group side, the rotations of the sphere about one fixed axis form a one-parameter subgroup of SO(3) isomorphic to U(1) = SO(2): the full symmetry of the sphere contains a circle group for every choice of axis. The U(1) that Kaluza–Klein obtains by postulating the fiber S¹ is therefore available as a one-parameter subgroup of the SO(3) that the McGucken Sphere’s cross-section carries — one axis of rotation out of all of them. The scope of this statement is fixed exactly: it is a group-theoretic containment, U(1) ⊂ SO(3), and the construction of the electromagnetic U(1) fiber from the Sphere’s SO(3) belongs to the Standard Model gauge group sector of the Light Time Dimension Theory corpus (§V.6, §V.9); the present paper asserts the containment and the location, and no more.

The cylinder condition as an identity of the McGucken accounting. Under the slot mapping of §II.3, the fifth slot of the accounting is the parameter t, related to the fourth dimension by the coordinate identity $t = x_4/(ic)$ — the integral $x_4 = ict$ of the Principle, solved for t. The parameter is therefore no independent variable: specifying the spacetime event fixes its value, and a partial derivative with respect to the fifth slot at fixed event has no independent direction along which to act. The statement corresponding to the cylinder condition — that no field carries independent dependence on the fifth slot — holds identically in the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework, as a consequence of what the fifth slot is. Kaluza imposed the condition by decree, Klein enforced it by scale, and the McGucken accounting derives it: the condition is the visible signature, inside Kaluza–Klein’s own formalism, that its fifth dimension is a reified parameter.

V.11  The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ Reading of the Kaluza–Klein Radius: The Elementary One-Tick Sphere of the Quantized Expansion

The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ states the physical reality that the fourth dimension $x_4$ is expanding at the rate c from every spacetime point, and §V.6 states the quantisation of that expansion: h is the quantum of action associated with one oscillation of $x_4$ at its fundamental Planck frequency $f_P = \sqrt{c^5/\hbar G}$. One oscillation therefore occupies one Planck time, $t_P = 1/f_P = \sqrt{\hbar G/c^5}$, and the expansion proceeds tick by tick. This subsection identifies what, in that quantised expansion, corresponds to the fixed radius r of Kaluza–Klein’s fiber — and the identification requires distinguishing two properties that the word “fixed” conflates: a radius that is definite at an instant, and a radius that never changes. Kaluza–Klein’s r has the second property. A halted cross-section of the McGucken Sphere would supply it only by stopping the dynamics, and the dynamics is the founding equation; the quantised expansion supplies it with nothing stopped.

The invariant of a quantised expansion is the step. As the expansion proceeds, the cumulative spatial radius of the McGucken Sphere sourced at an event grows through the sequence $c\,t_P$, $2c\,t_P$, $3c\,t_P$, …, while the increment per tick is the same at every tick and at every event: $\Delta r = c\,t_P = \sqrt{\hbar G/c^3} = \ell_P$, the Planck length. The elementary one-tick McGucken Sphere — the Sphere as it stands one oscillation after its sourcing event, of spatial radius $\ell_P$ — is therefore a definite, time-independent, Planck-scale length present at every spacetime event, existing inside fully running dynamics as the quantum of the expansion. These are exactly the four properties of Kaluza–Klein’s fiber radius: definite, unchanging in time, Planck-scale, and attached to every event. The identification of this subsection is that Kaluza–Klein’s r corresponds to the spatial radius of the elementary one-tick McGucken Sphere, invariant because the rate c and the tick $t_P$ are universal by the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ — with nothing frozen and nothing halted. The correspondence is order-of-scale, and the numerical gap is stated rather than hidden: Klein’s own computed period, $L = (hc/e)\sqrt{16\pi G} = 0.8 \times 10^{-30}\ \mathrm{cm}$ (§III.3), sits three orders of magnitude above $\ell_P \approx 1.6 \times 10^{-33}\ \mathrm{cm}$.

The dressing of the radius by the fine-structure constant. The identification can be stated more sharply by computing the radius Kaluza–Klein itself is forced to adopt. In natural units ($\hbar = c = 1$, $G = \ell_P^2$), the charge of the n-th mode is $q_n = n\sqrt{16\pi G}/r$ — the fifth-momentum coupling of equation (4) with the Einstein–Maxwell normalisation — and fitting the first rung to the elementary charge, $q_1 = e$ with $e^2 = 4\pi\alpha$ in Heaviside–Lorentz units, gives $16\pi G/r^2 = 4\pi\alpha$, hence $$r = \sqrt{4G/\alpha} = (2/\sqrt{\alpha})\,\ell_P \approx 23.4\,\ell_P \tag{13}$$

a radius of $3.8 \times 10^{-34}\ \mathrm{m}$, agreeing with the value the modern pedagogical literature states for the charge-fitted circle [55]. Equation (13) says something exact about the identification of this subsection: the entire excess of Kaluza–Klein’s radius over the spatial radius of the elementary one-tick McGucken Sphere is a pure function of the fine-structure constant — the electromagnetic coupling — and of nothing else. That is the form the identification predicts. The underlying length is the one-tick radius $\Delta r = c\,t_P = \ell_P$, supplied by the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ as rate times tick, with circumference $2\pi\ell_P$ as the matching period; the factor $2/\sqrt{\alpha}$ enters through the fit of the circle to the electron’s charge; and both dimensional anchors of that fit are themselves properties of the expansion — c its rate, ℏ its action per oscillatory cycle, through $e^2 = \alpha\hbar c$ of equation (12), §V.6. Every dimensional ingredient of Kaluza–Klein’s radius is therefore supplied by the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$, with the dimensionless α remaining the single empirical number, exactly as §V.6 bounds the claim. Klein’s own 1926 period $L = (hc/e)\sqrt{16\pi G} = 0.8 \times 10^{-30}\ \mathrm{cm}$ is the same α-dressed Planck length under his conventions — h rather than ℏ, a period rather than a radius — which is the origin of the three-order gap stated above.

The corpus grounds the tick structure independently of this paper. The founding statement is made with the action quantum built into the expansion — the principle carries “action ℏ per Planck-frequency oscillation” in its dynamical premise — and the Huygens iteration of the expansion treats the single Planck tick as its elementary step, re-sourcing an elementary Sphere at every event continuously, so that the one-tick Sphere is permanently present because the dynamics keeps producing it [25]. The elementary Sphere at an event is traced by the apex-to-surface null vectors of the expansion — the sphere of null directions at that event. The set of null directions at a spacetime point is a two-sphere S² attached to every event of the manifold — the celestial sphere of standard differential geometry — and it is a genuine fiber in the bundle-theoretic sense: a compact space assigned to every point of the base. The fiber form that Kaluza–Klein postulated — a compact shape attached to every event — is therefore present in the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework as the S² of null directions of the elementary expansion, the object on which the corpus’s twistor derivation is built [35], with Kaluza–Klein’s S¹ one great circle of it by the containment U(1) ⊂ SO(3) of §V.10.

The state of the Kaluza–Klein correspondence is then exact. Four legs stand: the dependence rule (the cylinder condition holds as an identity of the accounting, §V.10); the symmetry (Kaluza–Klein’s U(1) is a one-parameter subgroup of the Sphere’s SO(3), §V.10); the fiber form (the S² of null directions at every event, this subsection); and the radius (the elementary one-tick Sphere, this subsection, at order-of-scale precision). One item of the correspondence is settled in §V.12: the electromagnetic U(1) connection is constructed in the Standard Model gauge group paper of the corpus on the $x_4$-orientation bundle — the phase circle of $x_4$’s oscillation, a fiber distinct from the null-direction two-sphere of this subsection — with the locality of the symmetry forced and $A_\mu$ derived as the bundle connection [36]. One item remains open, stated exactly: the dressing of the radius by the fine-structure constant — equation (13) gives the charge-fitted radius as $(2/\sqrt{\alpha})\,\ell_P$, with Klein’s L its period-convention form — which keeps the radius leg an order-of-scale statement until the factor $2/\sqrt{\alpha}$ is derived from the electromagnetic coupling of the $x_4$-orientation bundle of §V.12.

V.12  The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ Reading of Kaluza–Klein’s U(1): The Electromagnetic Connection on the $x_4$-Orientation Bundle

The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ states the physical reality that the fourth dimension $x_4$ is expanding at the rate c from every spacetime point, with the i as the perpendicularity marker of $x_4$ to the spatial three — and the Standard Model gauge group paper of the Light Time Dimension Theory corpus [36] constructs the electromagnetic U(1) from exactly this statement. The construction closes the first open item of §V.11, and this subsection states it with the corpus theorems quoted.

The fiber. The corpus defines the $x_4$-orientation bundle as “the principal U(1)-bundle $\pi: P \to \mathbb{R}^{1,3}$, with fiber U(1) at each spacetime event representing the circle of possible $x_4$-phase angles $\alpha \in [0, 2\pi)$ for the matter orientation condition (M) at that event” [36, Definition 125]. The circle attached to every spacetime event is the circle of phase angles of the Compton-frequency oscillation along the expanding fourth dimension. Under the slot mapping of §II.3, this identifies which circle Kaluza–Klein’s fifth-dimension circle is: the phase circle of $x_4$’s oscillation. Kaluza–Klein’s own formalism supports the identification, because the fifth coordinate of a charge eigenstate enters observable physics exclusively inside the phase factor $\exp(inx_5/r)$ of equation (4) — Klein’s wave field is written $U = \exp(i\hbar^{-1}\Phi)$ from the outset (§III.3) — so position on Kaluza–Klein’s circle and phase were always one datum. The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework locates the circle where Kaluza–Klein’s formalism used it.

Local invariance forced. Kaluza–Klein postulates the circle, and standard quantum electrodynamics postulates the locality of the U(1) symmetry; the corpus derives the locality. The theorem: the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ “while providing a globally-defined direction $+ic$ for the $x_4$-expansion, does not provide a globally-defined reference phase for the $x_4$-orientation at the spinor level … The absence of a globally preferred α-reference forces local U(1) invariance: physics must be invariant under independent reparametrisation of the $x_4$-phase at each spacetime point” [36, Theorem 123]. The gauge potential $A_\mu$ then arises as the field restoring local invariance, and the corpus identifies it as geometry: “The mathematical object ‘connection on a principal U(1)-bundle’ and the physical object ‘electromagnetic four-potential $A_\mu$’ are the same object” [36, Theorem 128]. Maxwell’s equations follow as bundle theorems — the homogeneous pair as the Bianchi identity of the curvature, the inhomogeneous pair as the Euler–Lagrange equations of the gauge action [36, Theorem 130]. Kaluza–Klein obtained Maxwell’s equations from the five-dimensional Einstein equations on a postulated geometry; the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework obtains them as the integrability conditions of parallel transport on a bundle whose existence and locality the Principle forces.

Where the two frameworks part ways observationally. Three divergent consequences follow, each a theorem in [36] and each testable. First, monopoles: the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ supplies a globally-defined section of the $x_4$-orientation bundle — the constant $+ic$ direction at every event — and a principal U(1)-bundle with a global section is trivial, so the first Chern class vanishes, $c_1(P) = 0$, and “monopoles are topologically forbidden in the McGucken framework, not merely high-energy-suppressed” [36, Theorem 135]. Kaluza–Klein-descended grand-unified constructions predict monopoles suppressed to the GUT scale; the corpus prohibits them absolutely, and states the falsification condition plainly: “A single monopole anywhere in the universe would falsify the McGucken framework” [36, Theorem 135, Step 6]. Second, charge quantisation without the tower and without monopoles: “Electric-charge quantisation nonetheless holds in the McGucken framework as a consequence of the discrete-mode structure of the $x_4$-orientation Fock space: $\hat Q_{x_4}$ takes only integer values (number of matter modes minus number of antimatter modes), so electric charge is quantised. Charge quantisation and monopole absence are independent predictions of the McGucken framework with separate origins, both rooted in $dx_4/dt = ic$ ” [36, Corollary 136]. This supplies the theorem that deficiency 7 of §III.2 and §V.8 located in the gauge sector: Kaluza–Klein’s integer was the tower rung n, purchased at the Planck-mass price; the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework’s integer is the mode count of the $x_4$-orientation Fock space, carrying no tower. Third, the photon mass: the corpus proves $m_\gamma = 0$ exactly, as a theorem rather than a phenomenological fit, consistent with the empirical bound $m_\gamma \lesssim 10^{-18}\ \mathrm{eV}$ [36, Corollary 134]; in Kaluza–Klein the photon’s masslessness is the n = 0 membership of a tower whose n ≠ 0 members are misplaced by twenty-two orders of magnitude.

Precision on the fibers. The electromagnetic fiber of this subsection — the $x_4$-phase circle of [36, Definition 125] — and the null-direction two-sphere of §V.11 are distinct geometric objects, and the corpus assigns them distinct gauge roles: the Sphere’s SO(3) lifts to the weak isospin SU(2) L (Part I of [36]), the $x_4$-phase circle carries U(1) em (the theorems quoted above), and the hypercharge U(1) Y arises by an inner-automorphism quotient (Part IV of [36]). The U(1) ⊂ SO(3) containment of §V.10 is a statement about the Sphere’s rotational symmetry and its electroweak descent; the Kaluza–Klein circle correspondence of the present subsection runs through the phase circle. The completion claim of the paper’s title lands here in its final form: Kaluza and Klein attached a circle to every spacetime event and had to assign it a topology, a scale, a dependence rule, and a symmetry by hand; the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ attaches the circle of its own oscillation’s phase, forces the locality of its symmetry, derives its connection, its field equations, its exact photon masslessness, its charge quantisation, and its monopole prohibition — and does so with the fifth slot of the accounting identified as the emergent parameter t rather than a reified static axis.

V.13  How the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ Overcomes the Shortcomings of Kaluza–Klein: The Complete Catalog

The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ states the physical reality that the fourth dimension $x_4$ is expanding at the rate c from every spacetime point, as a wavefront whose oscillation carries the quantum of action h — c the rate of the expansion, ℏ its action per oscillatory step. This subsection assembles the complete catalog of Kaluza–Klein’s shortcomings as the record of a full century states them, from Kaluza’s own admissions of 1921 to the laboratory and collider null results of the 2020s — the founders’ admissions, the theorems proved against the theory from 1923 to 1983, the consistency pathologies of its mode spectrum, the experimental exclusions running to the present day, and the domains the theory never reached — and states, item by item, how the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ overcomes each one. Shortcomings already treated in this paper are carried in the master table with their section references; the shortcomings entering the paper here are given in full.

The founders’ own admissions. Kaluza closed his 1921 paper naming two difficulties in his own words [1, 37]. The first is the charge-to-mass problem of the electron: identifying charge with fifth-dimensional momentum forces the electron’s fifth velocity to a value that, in his words, “exceeds everything and defies all experience,” because the electron’s charge-to-mass ratio e / m is enormous in gravitational units. The difficulty is a single geometric velocity forced to carry two unrelated properties: charge through the fifth momentum and mass through the rest energy. The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ overcomes it by giving the two properties two distinct carriers — charge is the integer of the $x_4$-orientation Fock space and the phase of the $x_4$-oscillation (§V.12, [36, Corollary 136]), while mass is the Compton frequency $f_\tau = mc^2/h$ of equation (10) — and the only velocity in the accounting is the four-speed budget (7), legislated by the Principle for every object identically. The pathological fifth velocity was the signature of loading two properties onto the velocity of a reified slot. Kaluza’s second admission is the quantum itself: “what threatens all the ansatz which demand universal validity is the sphinx of modern physics – quantum theory” [37]. The threat was real for a classical five-dimensional geometry; it is the home ground of the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework, whose corpus derives the Schrödinger equation (§V.5), the canonical commutator, the Born rule, and the second-quantised field theory as theorems [25, 36].

The particle problem: a theorem chain from Einstein himself, 1923–1943. The founders’ programme hoped that particles would appear as regular solutions of the five-dimensional field equations — matter from geometry. The hope closed by theorem, three times, with Einstein a party each time. Einstein and Grommer proved in 1923 that Kaluza’s theory possesses no everywhere-regular, centrally symmetric static solutions [40]. Einstein and Bergmann reported in 1938, after what they called many fruitless efforts, that a regular field representation of matter in their generalisation of Kaluza’s theory does not exist [30]. Einstein and Pauli proved in 1943 the general non-existence of regular stationary solutions, extending the argument explicitly to the Kaluza–Klein five-dimensional cylindrical extension of spherically symmetric geometries [41]. The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ overcomes the particle problem by never posing it in the form the theorems close: matter in the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework is a standing oscillation of $x_4$ at the Compton frequency — the matter orientation condition of the corpus, $\Psi = \Psi_0 \cdot \exp(+I k x_4)$ with $k = mc/\hbar$ [36] — a phase configuration of the expansion itself, oscillatory by construction and quantum from the first line. The Einstein–Grommer–Bergmann–Pauli theorems bind static regular lumps of classical field under the cylinder condition; an $x_4$-oscillation at $\omega_C = mc^2/\hbar$ is none of those things, and the corpus builds the Dirac equation, the spinor structure, and the second-quantised matter field from it as theorems [36].

Two quantum instabilities of the compactification, 1982–1983. Witten proved in 1982 that the Kaluza–Klein vacuum $M^{(4)} \times S^1$ is semiclassically unstable [42]: in the theory without the protection of supersymmetric fermion boundary conditions, spacetime nucleates a “bubble of nothing” — a gravitational instanton at whose wall the fifth-dimensional circle pinches to zero size, bounding a region containing no spacetime at all — and the vacuum decays. Appelquist and Chodos computed in 1983 the one-loop effective potential of the gravitational modes on the circle [43]: the Casimir energy of the compact dimension is negative and unbounded below as the radius shrinks, so quantum effects drive the circle to contract toward zero with nothing in the theory to stop it. The two results squeeze the compactification from both sides — the vacuum can tunnel to nothing, and short of tunnelling, its radius has no resting place. Both channels run through the same object: a compact modulus, a radius free to vary as a field. The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ overcomes both instabilities by containing no such object. There is no compact fifth dimension to pinch off at a bubble wall and no radius field for a Casimir potential to push: the Planck-scale length of the framework is the one-tick McGucken Sphere of §V.11, $\Delta r = c\,t_P = \ell_P$, a rate multiplied by a tick, both universal by the Principle — a constant of the dynamics rather than a degree of freedom with a potential. Kaluza–Klein’s radius is a field that quantum effects push; the one-tick Sphere’s radius is a quantity that nothing can push, because pushing it would mean changing c or $t_P$, and the Principle legislates the rate at every event. The scope of this resolution is stated exactly: the claim is that the Witten and Appelquist–Chodos decay channels are absent because their geometric prerequisite — the compact modulus — is absent, which is the strongest statement those theorems permit.

The consistency pathologies of the mode spectrum. The massive spin-two tower carries its own cluster of defects, recorded in Duff’s review [44]: a finite collection of massive spin-two fields is inconsistent, so the tower can never be truncated — truncation “would reintroduce the inconsistency” — while the massive modes carry an unusual gyromagnetic ratio producing unacceptable high-energy behaviour in Compton scattering, and the truncated theory’s gauge group degenerates from U(1) to ℝ, having, in Duff’s phrase, lost all memory of the periodicity. The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ overcomes the cluster at its root: §V.8 establishes that the framework carries no tower at all — no massive spin-two modes, hence no truncation question, no gyromagnetic pathology — and the framework’s Compton scattering is the precision-tested Klein–Nishina formula, reproduced end-to-end as a theorem of $dx_4/dt = ic$ in the corpus [36, Corollary 138]. The periodicity Duff’s truncation loses is intrinsic to the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework’s U(1), because the fiber is the phase circle of the $x_4$-oscillation itself (§V.12), periodic by what it is rather than by a boundary condition.

The experimental record, 1983 to the present. After the theorems came the instruments, and they have found nothing where Kaluza–Klein pointed. Torsion-balance tests of the gravitational inverse-square law — the direct probe of extra spatial dimensions, since a dimension of accessible size changes the force law from $1/r^2$ to $1/r^3$ at separations below its scale (§III of this paper states the mechanism) — find no deviation from $1/r^2$ down to separations of 52 μm [45], excluding every extra dimension large enough for laboratory gravity to reach. Collider searches find no Kaluza–Klein excitation of any field: the lightest Kaluza–Klein graviton of the warped-extra-dimension descendants is excluded into the multi-TeV range by the ATLAS diphoton resonance searches [46], and no rung of any tower has ever been observed. And the original theory sits where no instrument reaches: Klein tuned the circle to invisibility, $0.8 \times 10^{-30}\ \mathrm{cm}$, so the theory’s central object is beyond every direct probe by construction — the testable descendants are excluded wherever tested, and the untestable original is untestable by design. The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ overcomes the null record by predicting it: the accounting of §II.2 contains no compact fifth dimension to find at any separation or any energy, so a century of empty searches is what the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework requires — while the extra dimension it does contain registers in every laboratory continuously, because $x_4$’s expansion is what every photon clock reads as time (§II.2, §VI), and its size is $ct$, the largest scale in the observable universe (§IV.3). Kaluza–Klein hid its dimension and the instruments confirm the hiding; the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework hides nothing, and every clock is its detector.

The matter problem and the vacuum-selection problem. Pure five-dimensional geometry contains no source for matter: Kaluza’s unification delivers the field sector, and matter enters by hand, as external stress-energy and a geodesic postulate. The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ overcomes this as stated under the particle problem above: matter is a configuration of the expansion — the Compton-frequency standing oscillation of the matter orientation condition (M) — rather than an addition to the geometry, and the corpus derives its field theory [36]. And nothing in the five-dimensional Einstein equations selects $M^{(4)} \times S^1$ as the ground state over flat $M^{(5)}$, over $M^{(4)} \times \mathbb{R}$, or over any other solution — the vacuum is chosen by hand, which is the compactification arbitrariness of §V.9 stated as a vacuum-selection problem. The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ overcomes it because no selection exists to make: the spherically symmetric expansion is forced by the perpendicularity of $x_4$ to the spatial three (§V.9), and the global uniformity of $+ic$ leaves one vacuum, everywhere the same, with the corpus establishing on that uniformity the absolute absence of domain walls and topological defects [36].

Every row of the catalog resolves through the same mechanism, and the closing attribution is explicit: each shortcoming of Kaluza–Klein traces to properties its fifth dimension had to be assigned because it had none of its own — the signature of the reified parameter of §II.3 — and each McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ resolution traces to the one property the fourth dimension has by law: the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$, the physical expansion of $x_4$ at the rate c from every spacetime point, whose oscillation carries the quantum of action. Kaluza–Klein’s shortcomings were the cost of a dimension that does nothing; the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ is the physics of the dimension that moves.

V.14  The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ Reading of the Modern Pedagogical Case Against Kaluza–Klein

§V.13 assembled the shortcomings of Kaluza–Klein as the primary record states them, from Kaluza’s 1921 admissions to the collider null results of the 2020s. This subsection reads one further document of the record: a modern five-hour pedagogical treatment of five-dimensional Kaluza–Klein [55], built on the Bailin–Love review [56], which constructs the theory in full — the metric split of equation (3), the Kaluza–Klein miracle, mass and charge quantisation from periodicity, general covariance as the origin of local U(1) invariance — and then states its flaws. Its value here is diagnostic: assembled with no knowledge of the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$, it arrives independently at the division this paper derives, and every item on both sides of that division lands where the five-slot accounting of §II.3 places it. Quotations below are verbatim from the video’s transcript, with the automatic transcription’s phonetic renderings corrected in brackets.

The division, in the video’s own words: “when we try to pick it apart by looking at the flaws, we can only smash it into pieces. We can’t smash it all the way into dust. And the pieces still ring true.” The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ reading of that sentence is §II.3: the pieces that ring true are the ones the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ derives as theorems, and the pieces that smash are the hand assignments a reified parameter made necessary.

The pieces the video says ring true, item by item. First, “the 5D metric tensor naturally contains the 4D metric tensor as well as a U1 gauge field.” The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ reading is §V.12: the circle in the fifth column is the phase circle of $x_4$’s Compton-frequency oscillation — the $x_4$-orientation bundle of [36, Definition 125] — with $A_\mu$ its connection [36, Theorem 128], an identification Kaluza–Klein’s own formalism supports, since the fifth coordinate enters observable physics only inside the phase factor $\exp(inx_5/r)$. Second, the Kaluza–Klein miracle — “the 5D Einstein Hilbert action automatically breaks out into the 4D Einstein Hilbert action and the 4D Maxwell action,” which the video generalises through “a [Riemannian] submersion and O’Neill’s theorem.” The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ reading is the inheritance claim of §XI: the geometric unification is retained, with the physical identity of the fifth slot supplied. Third, “general covariance yields local U1 symmetry… local U1 symmetry is not a magical principle.” The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ reading is §V.12, which proves the stronger statement: Kaluza–Klein postulates the circle and observes that θ-reparametrisation invariance has the form of local U(1), while the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ forces the locality with no circle postulated — the Principle supplies no globally preferred $x_4$-phase reference [36, Theorem 123] — and delivers Maxwell’s equations as bundle theorems [36, Theorem 130]. Fourth, “to the extent that electromagnetism is the fingerprint of a fifth dimension, it is decidedly the fingerprint of a[n] extra spatial dimension, not an extra time dimension.” The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ reading: the video’s dichotomy omits the position the accounting of §II.3 occupies — the fifth slot is the parameter t reified, neither an extra spatial dimension nor an extra time dimension — and the circle that does the gauge work is a circle of phase (§V.12), which is why it yields the U(1) physics without the tower a spatial circle brings with it.

The radion. The video: freezing $\tilde g_{44}$ by fiat is “philosophically indefensible”; stabilisation by a potential fails because “relaxation and excitement are yin and yang… You can’t tell a story about minimizing a potential without that story including the possibility to excite the thing in that potential,” so radions should exist and are unobserved; and “in the presence of an electromagnetic field, the frozen [radion] concept is actually physically incoherent,” because “the electromagnetic field’s energy depends on how big R is.” The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ resolution is §III.4 wave 3 with §II.2: four dimensions, no fifth metric row, no radion, no radius to stabilise — the classical form of the video’s incoherence point is carried as Thiry’s theorem, φ = const forcing $F^2 = 0$ [29] — and the scale question is answered by the one-tick Sphere of §V.11, whose radius is rate times tick, a constant of the dynamics rather than a degree of freedom in a potential.

The mass–charge catastrophe. The video: fitting the elementary charge to one phase winding forces “the radius r of the fifth dimension [to] be $3.8 \times 10^{-34}$ m, which is about 23 [Planck] lengths,” with “no control over this value of r”; the first rung then weighs “$5.22 \times 10^{17}$ GeVs, which for context is $10^{21}$ × the mass of an electron”; “the electron’s not on the ladder at all”; a massive five-dimensional field only “adjust[s] in the wrong direction cuz it just adds mass”; and the conclusion — “devastating. This crushes our hopes and dreams… there’s just no way of solving this problem within the context of anything resembling 5D [Kaluza–Klein].” The video’s figure reconciles with deficiency 7 of §III.2 exactly: twenty-one orders of magnitude measured from the first-rung mass $1/r = 5.22 \times 10^{17}$ GeV at the charge-fitted radius $r = (2/\sqrt{\alpha})\,\ell_P$ of equation (13), twenty-two orders measured from the Planck mass $1.22 \times 10^{19}$ GeV at $r \sim \ell_P$ — the factor of about 23 between the two reference masses is the same 23-Planck-length radius, and the video states the ratio itself: the first rung “is about 1/23 of the [Planck] mass for the same reason R is 23 [Planck] lengths.” The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ resolution is §V.8 with §V.12: no rung index exists, and charge and mass have distinct carriers — the orientation integer $\hat Q_{x_4}$ [36, Corollary 136] and the Compton frequency of equation (10). The video’s sentence that no solution exists within anything resembling five-dimensional Kaluza–Klein is correct, and it is the reason the solution has four dimensions.

Charge quantisation. The video closes its flaw discussion: “The good news is that there are many explanations of charge quantization. The bad news is we don’t know which, if any, of them are true,” while its concluding chapter allows that “there might be a grain of truth in the idea that charge quantization can be explained via some kind of topological argument.” §V.12 supplies the topological argument with the pathology removed and the falsification condition stated: the integer spectrum of $\hat Q_{x_4}$ [36, Corollary 136], monopoles forbidden by $c_1(P) = 0$ [36, Theorem 135], and $m_\gamma = 0$ exact [36, Corollary 134].

The remaining flaws the video names map row by row onto the master catalog of §V.13. “5[D Kaluza–Klein] cannot even in principle contain [chiral fermions]” is Witten’s 1981 no-go [31], whose hypotheses — compactified extra dimensions and dimensional reduction — the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework leaves unmet (§III.4, wave 5). “We still have to put in a matter field [ψ] by hand… we are still left asking the question of so what even is matter?” is the matter problem, answered by the matter orientation condition (M): matter is the Compton-frequency standing oscillation of $x_4$ (§V.13, [36]). “Einstein was like, ‘Yo, uh what’s up with cylinder condition?’… it’s totally possible that theta modes are just really heavy… kind of an emergent low energy limit” is Klein’s energetic enforcement rediscovered — a scale argument that still assumes the circle and its radius — while §V.10 derives the condition: Kaluza imposed it by decree, Klein enforced it by scale, and the McGucken accounting derives it as an identity, $t = x_4/(ic)$ leaving no independent fifth variable. “Ed Witten proved back in 1982 that the five-dimensional [Kaluza–Klein] vacuum is not stable and in theory a bubble of nothingness could propagate” is the semiclassical vacuum decay [42], resolved in §V.13 together with the Appelquist–Chodos contraction the video does not reach [43], both channels closed because the compact modulus is absent. And the missing nuclear forces, which the video sets aside as “a toy model by design” awaiting eleven dimensions, need no setting aside: the Standard Model gauge group is derived in [36] from the orientation geometry of the one expanding $x_4$, in four dimensions (§V.12).

The video’s closing question. The video ends: “do we live in three dimensions of space and one dimension of time? Or is our spacetime some weird higherdimensional thing…? we can say with total confidence, nobody knows,” and leaves the viewer with “a splinter in your brain that’s just there forever now” — “from now on when you think about the laws of electromagnetism from a gauge theoretic perspective, you can’t help but think about it in terms of an extra little circle at each point in spacetime.” The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ renders the verdict the video declares out of reach: the universe has four dimensions — $x_1, x_2, x_3$, and $x_4$, expanding at the rate c from every event, its oscillation carrying the quantum of action h — and time t, read on photon clocks, is the emergent parameter of that expansion. The circle at each point of spacetime is real, exactly as the video senses, and §V.12 states what it is: the phase circle of $x_4$’s Compton-frequency oscillation — a circle of phase rather than of space, carrying the U(1) physics with no radius modulus, no tower, no radion, no bubble of nothing, and no chirality obstruction, because each of those pathologies attaches to a reified parameter dressed as a spatial dimension and none of them attaches to a phase. The extra dimension itself stands in plain view: its size is ct, the largest scale in the observable universe, and every photon clock reads it (§IV.3, §V.13).

V.15  The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ Reading of the Record of Attempts to Put the Quantum, Nonlocality, and the Born Rule into the Fifth Dimension

§V.4 established that Kaluza–Klein never presented a method for nonlocality and that its product geometry could not supply one retroactively. This subsection asks the complementary historical question: across the century, did anyone try — to inject nonlocality and entanglement into the five-dimensional framework, to account for the nonlocal wavefunction, or to derive the Born rule from the fifth dimension? The record divides cleanly. The single-particle wave items — duality, quantised momentum, uncertainty — were attempted repeatedly, by the founders and their successors. The two-particle and statistical items — entanglement, the configuration-space wavefunction, the Born rule — were attempted by no one within Kaluza–Klein proper, and the one modern attempt to produce entanglement from a five-dimensional spacetime had to abandon Klein’s spatial circle to do it.

Klein, 1926. The founding attempt is §III.3: Klein derived the five-dimensional wave equation, claimed that “the differential equation underlying the new quantum mechanics of Schrödinger can be derived from a wave equation of a five-dimensional space,” and hoped that “the origin of Planck’s quantum may be sought just in this periodicity in the fifth dimension” [22]. The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ reading stands in §III.3: the right hope in the wrong location, with clause (K1) unmet because Klein’s wave ansatz carried ℏ before the periodicity acted.

Rumer’s 5-optics, 1940s–1956. The Soviet physicist Yu. B. Rumer reinterpreted the fifth coordinate as the action S itself, compact with period the quantum of action, so that a shift of S by one period changes no physics; Bohr’s quantisation rules for the hydrogen atom follow, and the gauge shift of electromagnetism becomes the coordinate shift $x_5 \to x_5 + f(x)$ [57, 58]. The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ reading: a second founder-generation attempt to locate h in fifth-dimensional periodicity — Klein’s clause (K2) again — with the slot reified this time as action rather than as a spatial length, and with the same reach: one-particle quantisation, nothing on correlations between systems.

Wesson’s space-time-mass and induced-matter programme, 1983–2011. Wesson first made the fifth coordinate rest mass, $x_5 = Gm/c^2$ [59], and the later induced-matter programme identified it with the Compton wavelength — “the extra coordinate is the Compton wavelength of the particle,” $l = h/mc$ — running massive four-dimensional particles on null five-dimensional paths and claiming wave-particle duality from the null condition, a Klein–Gordon equation for the extra coordinate, the action quantisation $\int mc\,ds = nh$, and “a Heisenberg-type relation” from five-dimensional determinism, under the slogan “God does not play dice in a higher-dimensional world” [60, 61]. The scope of the claims, stated exactly: both papers address one-particle wave kinematics; neither addresses nonlocality, entanglement, or measurement; and Wesson’s own closing list of open problems names “the extension to 5D of the 4D wave function and probability distribution” [60] — the Born rule left as future work, never attempted. The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ reading: the Compton identification is the right frequency in the wrong role. In the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework the Compton frequency is the particle’s coupling to the oscillation of the expanding fourth dimension — equation (10) — a rate of participation in a dynamics; Wesson reified it as one more static coordinate, mass promoted to an axis exactly as Kaluza–Klein promoted the parameter t, and the two-particle items stayed out of reach for the reason §V.4 states: a coordinate without dynamics supplies no selective coincidence.

The modern geometrisations of entanglement. Three lines exist, and each confirms the diagnosis. The braneworld shortcut constructions (§V.4, [4]) send causal signals through the bulk, which is the opposite of an Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen correlation. The wormhole conjecture ER = EPR [62] — Einstein–Rosen bridges dual to entangled pairs — is the prominent modern geometrisation of entanglement, and it stands outside Kaluza–Klein proper on both counts: its geometry is a wormhole rather than a compact fifth dimension, and it presupposes the full apparatus of quantum mechanics, Born rule included, deriving none of it. And the one direct attempt to produce entanglement from a five-dimensional spacetime is a 2023 toy model [63]: to obtain “nonlocal correlations without nonlocal causation” it required a second time dimension — signature (3,2), warped and non-compact — together with a hidden sub-quantum field propagating in the extra time and non-unitary collapse dynamics added to standard quantum mechanics, with $|\psi|^2$ retained as a postulate. Three imported ingredients, with Klein’s spatial circle discarded as unusable for the job. The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ reading: the imports are the measured price of the missing dynamics. The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework buys the same item with none of them, because $\Delta x_4 = 0$ for null pairs from a common event is a theorem of the expansion (§V.4), carried by the nonlocal surface of the Sphere, with no second time axis, no hidden field, and no collapse dynamics.

The Born rule. The century’s record — Kaluza’s paper [1], Klein’s papers [2, 22], Rumer [57], Einstein’s variants [30, 40, 41], the supergravity and string eras [31, 33, 34, 44], the braneworlds [4], and the Overduin–Wesson review of the whole tradition [59] — contains no attempt to derive the Born rule from extra-dimensional geometry. Every programme in the tradition is formulated on standard quantum mechanics with the Born rule as a postulate: the programmes quantise the geometry, and none of them geometrises the quantisation. The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework reverses the direction: the Born rule is derived by five convergent routes from the geometry of the Sphere [47], with the Born geometry and the measurement resolution at [25], and nonlocality and probability are derived together in the corpus [73], with nonlocality the three-dimensional shadow of $x_4$-coincidence, carried by the nonlocal surface of §V.4. The division of the century’s record is then the diagnosis of §II.3 applied to quantum mechanics: single-particle wave kinematics can be imitated by a static compact slot, because waves on a circle quantise; correlation and probability cannot, because each requires a geometric fact that holds for some pairs and fails for others, and only a dimension with dynamics has one to offer.

V.16  The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ Reading of Kaluza–Klein Overall: The Right General Approach Without the True Nature of Spacetime

Measured against that statement, Kaluza and Klein got the general approach right in four ways, and made one error about the nature of spacetime; §III.4, §V.13, §V.14, and §V.15 establish that every failure of their programme traces to that one error. This subsection states the overall verdict in one place.

What Kaluza and Klein got right. First, the count: there is a fifth slot in the accounting of the universe beyond $x_1, x_2, x_3$ and clock time — and the McGucken accounting is also five slots, four dimensions plus the emergent parameter t (§II.3). Second, the method: unification is geometric, with no force added by hand — and the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework delivers Maxwell’s equations as bundle theorems of the $x_4$-orientation geometry and gravity as the invariant expansion meeting stretched spatial geometry (§V.12, §V.7, §XI). Third, the architecture: a compact object sits at every spacetime event and the gauge physics lives on it — and the McGucken Sphere stands at every event, with Kaluza–Klein’s circle recoverable from it three ways: as the subgroup U(1) ⊂ SO(3), as a great circle of the null-direction two-sphere, and, for electromagnetism, as the phase circle of $x_4$’s oscillation (§V.10, §V.11, §V.12). Fourth, the quantum instinct: Klein’s hope that h originates in the periodicity of the extra dimension (§III.3), and Rumer’s action-periodic variant of the same hope (§V.15), were the right hope in the wrong location — h belongs to the oscillation of $x_4$’s expansion, one tick per Planck time (§V.6, §V.11).

What they did not see. The fifth slot is the parameter t — the measure of $x_4$’s expansion, read on photon clocks — and they reified it into a static, compact, spatial axis. A parameter carries no topology, no scale, and no dynamics of its own (§II.3), so all three had to be assigned by hand: the circle, the radius, the cylinder condition. Every entry in the catalog of §V.13 is the bill for one of those assignments. The radion is the breathing of a radius that exists only because the slot was made spatial. The Planck-mass tower and the mass–charge catastrophe are momentum around a circle that exists only because the slot was made compact. The cylinder condition had to be decreed because a reified parameter’s dependence rule has no origin — while in the McGucken accounting it holds as an identity, $t = x_4/(ic)$ leaving no independent fifth variable (§V.10). The bubble of nothing and the Casimir contraction attack a compact modulus the correct ontology never contains (§V.13). The quantum items the tradition did reach were the one-particle ones a static circle can imitate, and the ones it never reached — entanglement, the nonlocal wavefunction, the Born rule — are exactly the ones that require a dimension with dynamics (§V.4, §V.15). Even the radius was a message in disguise: the value the charge fit forces, $r = (2/\sqrt{\alpha})\,\ell_P$ of equation (13), is the one-tick Sphere’s radius dressed by the electromagnetic coupling — Planck-anchored all along (§V.11).

The overall statement. Take Kaluza–Klein’s five slots; identify four as the dimensions $x_1, x_2, x_3, x_4$ and the fifth as the emergent parameter of the fourth dimension’s expansion; and everything Kaluza and Klein built survives while everything that broke dissolves — because what they called a static curled-up fifth dimension was the moving fourth one, seen without its motion. The extra dimension was never hidden at the Planck scale: its size is ct, the largest scale in the observable universe, and every photon clock reads it (§IV.3). Kaluza and Klein had the architecture of the answer — five slots, pure geometry, a compact carrier at every event, the quantum in a periodicity — and mistook the moving fourth dimension for a static fifth. The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ supplies the motion, and with it the completion that the title of this paper names.

V.17  The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ Reading of the Record on Thermodynamics, the Arrows of Time, and the Light Cone in Kaluza–Klein

In the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework the second law is the geometric theorem (8) of §V.2, all five arrows of time descend from the one-directional expansion (§V.3, [47]), and the light cone is the locus the expanding wavefront traces (Appendix A.0). The Principle therefore predicts a specific shape for the Kaluza–Klein record on these three items: a tradition whose extra dimension has no dynamics should show thermodynamics applied to the extra dimension but never derived from it, no derivation of an arrow of time at all, and repeated partial findings of the null structure without its source. The record shows exactly that shape.

Thermodynamics. The founders’ papers contain none: Kaluza 1921 and Klein 1926 are classical field unification and wave mechanics throughout, with no entropy, no temperature, and no irreversibility anywhere — deficiency 3 of §III.2. Thermodynamics enters the record only in the 1980s quantum revival, in three forms. First, the free energy of the circle itself: the Appelquist–Chodos Casimir computation [43] applied thermodynamics to the compact dimension, with the result of §V.13 that its radius has no resting place — a line continuing to the finite-temperature Casimir computations in Kaluza–Klein spacetime [66]. Second, entropy from the extra dimensions: the Kaluza–Klein cosmology of 1983–84 proposed that the entropy of the observable universe was produced by the contraction of the extra dimensions [64, 65] — in the words of Harvey, Kolb, and Perry, “the excitations of the extra dimensions are realized as 4-dimensional massive particles, which presumably decay,” “thereby increasing the effective 3-dimensional entropy” [65]. This is an account of where the present entropy came from, with the time direction presupposed; no paper of the record derives $dS/dt > 0$ from the fifth dimension. Third, the deepest appearance, unremarked as such: finite-temperature physics is itself field theory on a compact Euclidean time circle — the Matsubara formalism, with period $\hbar/(k_B T)$ — so the one compact circle with a thermal payoff anywhere in physics is the Euclidean $x_4$ circle, exactly the structure that worked example A.5.4 uses for the Hawking temperature, $L_H = 4\pi r_s = c\hbar\beta_H$. The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ reading: the thermal circle is the Wick-rotated fourth dimension, with the rotation itself grounded in the corpus [28] and the KMS periodicity derived as geometric $x_4$-periodicity at operator-algebraic rigor in the corpus General Relativity paper [7, Chapter 11bis], and the second law is derived rather than applied — equation (8) of §V.2, with the full derivation of thermodynamics as a chain of theorems of $dx_4/dt = ic$ in the corpus Thermodynamics paper [69].

The arrows of time. The five-dimensional Einstein equations are time-reversal symmetric exactly as the four-dimensional equations are, and a static spatial circle supplies no asymmetry; neither founder nor any successor within Kaluza–Klein proper attempted an arrow of time from the fifth dimension, and the entropy-production cosmology above presupposes the direction it would need to explain. The one direct attempt stands outside Kaluza–Klein proper and arrived in January 2026: Rubin’s “Multidimensional arrow of time” [68] explains the arrow by “the monotonic growth of the multidimensional manifold’s volume,” with “time’s directionality… driven by dominant entropy production in the higher-dimensional bulk,” in a warped brane-world of extra spatial dimensions, with the entropy imported as Bekenstein–Hawking–Wald entropy and the direction fixed by an asserted “Postulate of Causality.” The priority scope, stated exactly: the McGucken record of the arrow of time derived from the monotonic expansion of a dimension begins in the 1998 dissertation appendix [48] — time as an emergent phenomenon arising from a fourth dimension expanding at the velocity of light — and runs through the 2008–2013 FQXi record [49, 50, 51, 52, 53], with all five arrows derived as theorems in the Time paper [47] and §V.3 of this paper. Rubin’s mechanism shares the shape — temporal direction from monotonic geometric growth — and differs in execution at every point the accounting of §II.3 names: the growing object is a bulk of extra spatial dimensions rather than the one fourth dimension, the entropy is imported rather than derived, and the causality is postulated rather than derived as the causal arrow of §V.3.

The light cone. Here the tradition kept finding half of the answer. Klein’s 1926 wave field is the massless five-dimensional wave equation (§III.3), so the massive four-dimensional modes are null waves in five dimensions from the first paper onward. Rumer named his programme for the same observation: 5-optics — wave mechanics as optics, null propagation, one level up [57, 58]. Seahra and Wesson made the statement explicit in 2001: “massless particles in 5D can be massive in 4D,” with the stated costs that affine parametrisation produces “an anomalous acceleration or fifth force” and that the reparametrisation removing it “brings the correct definition of the proper time into question” [67]. The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ reading: the recurring instinct that everything is null one level up is the four-speed budget (7) seen through a reified slot. Every object’s total four-speed through the four dimensions is exactly c; mass is the Compton-frequency participation in the oscillating expansion, equation (10); the light cone is the locus the expanding wavefront traces (Appendix A.0) — the history of the McGucken Sphere itself, an identification the corpus General Relativity paper carries as a step of its common-sense proof, “the light cone is the McGucken Sphere, and the ‘null’ terminology was always telling us this” [7, §2.0.4] — with the photon at Absolute rest in $x_4$ riding its surface; and the proper-time ambiguity Seahra and Wesson met is resolved by keeping the four $x_4$-rate quantities (R1)–(R4) of Appendix A in their proper roles — the manifold rate, the worldline share, the proper-time component, and the accumulated advance, each doing one job.

The closing attribution, for the three records together. What Kaluza–Klein applied externally or presupposed, the McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ derives as theorem chains, each published in full in the Light Time Dimension Theory corpus: thermodynamics as a chain of theorems of the expanding fourth dimension [69]; quantum mechanics — the Schrödinger and Dirac equations, the Born rule, quantum nonlocality, and the full Feynman-diagram apparatus, with the postulates of quantum mechanics reduced to theorems [70]; general relativity as two independent theorem chains descending along the geometric and algebraic channels of the Principle’s duality [7]; Minkowski space and Hilbert space derived and unified — the Born rule, the Lorentzian spacetime metric, the Einstein field equations, and the six Wightman axioms of relativistic quantum field theory descending as theorem chains, with $dx_4/dt = ic$ recoverable from each derived structure [71]; and time’s arrows, symmetries, and asymmetries in the Time paper [47]. Thermodynamics, the arrows of time, and the light cone all descend as theorems of the fourth dimension that moves — a derivation the static fifth dimension had no dynamics to offer.

VI.  Time Is Not $x_4$: The Critical Distinction

The most persistent source of confusion in the geometry of spacetime is the identification of time with the fourth dimension. This confusion is understandable — in everyday experience, time and “the fourth dimension” seem synonymous — but it is wrong, and the McGucken Principle makes precise why it is wrong and what the correct relationship is.

Minkowski did not write $x_4 = t$. He wrote $x_4 = ict$. These are different in three ways:

  • The imaginary unit i signals that $x_4$ is orthogonal to the three spatial dimensions in a complex-plane sense, not merely in a geometric one. Rotating by i in the complex plane produces a 90° rotation; $x_4$ is, in this precise sense, perpendicular to all three spatial directions simultaneously.
  • The factor c converts units of time into units of length. $x_4$ is a geometric length (measured in metres, or in light-seconds), not a duration. Time t is a duration (measured in seconds). They are dimensionally distinct.
  • The structure of $x_4 = ict$ tells us that t is the measure of $x_4$’s advance: as $x_4$ expands by c metres, the coordinate t increases by one second. Time is the odometer of $x_4$’s expansion.

This means that time and $x_4$ are related as follows:

$x_4$ is the physical geometric axis that is expanding. t is the number we assign to count how far $x_4$ has expanded. Time flows because $x_4$ expands — not because time itself is fundamental. The irreversibility of time is the irreversibility of $x_4$’s expansion. The rate of time is set by the rate of $x_4$’s expansion, which is c.

This is why gravitational time dilation occurs: near a mass, $x_4$’s invariant expansion must bridge more proper spatial distance (the metric is stretched), so the same advance of $x_4$ corresponds to fewer seconds counted by a local clock. Clocks run slow near masses not because “time slows down” in some abstract sense, but because the ruler (t) measuring $x_4$’s advance is calibrated to local proper distance, which is larger near the mass.

In standard Kaluza–Klein, this distinction does not exist: t and $x_4$ are treated as one coordinate, and the fifth dimension is something else entirely. The McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework clarifies that the “something else” Kaluza and Klein were looking for was $x_4$ itself — properly understood as a physical, advancing, imaginary axis rather than a notational synonym for time.

VII.  The McGucken Framework, Kaluza–Klein, and Verlinde’s Entropic Gravity

To situate the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework within the landscape of unification attempts, it is useful to compare it simultaneously with Kaluza–Klein and with Verlinde’s entropic gravity [8, 9], the most prominent recent alternative to standard general relativity.

Verlinde’s proposal — that gravity is an entropic force arising from information on holographic screens — shares with Kaluza–Klein the limitation that it takes the fundamental constants as inputs and does not explain the arrow of time, quantum nonlocality, or the Schrödinger equation. It also introduces new problems: holographic screens have no unambiguous definition in general spacetimes, entropic forces are dissipative while gravity is conservative (Visser’s objection [10]), and specific dark matter predictions fail observationally for dwarf galaxies and the Bullet Cluster [11].

The McGucken Principle resolves all of these simultaneously, from a single postulate, without introducing holographic screens, without relying on statistical mechanics as a foundation, and without treating gravity as thermodynamic in origin. Gravity in the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework is geometric — a consequence of the least-action path in a spacetime whose clock rate varies with position — and is therefore inherently conservative. The thermodynamic phenomena (entropy increase, arrows of time) are also geometric, arising from the same expanding $x_4$, but they are distinct consequences of the same principle rather than the same phenomenon wearing different hats.

IX.  The Block Universe and the Reality of Time’s Flow

The block universe view — that all moments of time, past, present, and future, are equally real and that temporal flow is an illusion — has been associated with the geometric view of spacetime since Minkowski [12]. If the four-dimensional manifold is static, all of its points exist equally, and “now” is merely a label on a pre-existing structure.

The McGucken Principle dissolves this view. The four-dimensional manifold is not static: $x_4$ is advancing at rate ic. The present moment is the advancing surface of $x_4$’s expansion — the McGucken Sphere of radius $ct$, the locus at which causality is being enacted right now. The future has not been “laid out” in advance because $x_4$ has not yet expanded into it. The past is the region of spacetime that $x_4$’s expansion has already traversed and which therefore has fixed, causal, unretractable records.

Time flows because $x_4$ expands. The block universe rests on the confusion of $x_4$ with t — the assumption that the four-dimensional manifold is the complete and final structure, rather than the record of $x_4$’s ongoing expansion. A static block has no $dx_4/dt$. The physical universe does.

XI.  Conclusion

Kaluza and Klein made a profound discovery: an extra dimension unifies gravity and electromagnetism. They did not know what that extra dimension was doing. They gave it a topology (a circle) and a scale (the Planck length) and left it otherwise inert.

Minkowski had written down the answer in 1907. The fourth coordinate of spacetime is $x_4 = ict$. Differentiating gives $dx_4/dt = ic$. The extra dimension is not static. It is advancing. Its advance at rate c is the source of the invariance of the speed of light. Its imaginary character is the source of the imaginary unit in the Schrödinger equation. Its irreversibility is the source of the second law of thermodynamics and all five arrows of time. Its spherically symmetric expansion, meeting the stretched spatial geometry near a mass, gives rise to Newton’s inverse square law. Its null interval along photon worldlines gives rise to quantum entanglement and nonlocality. Its quantisation at the Planck scale gives rise to Planck’s constant.

The McGucken Principle does not discard Kaluza–Klein. It inherits all of Kaluza–Klein’s geometric benefits — the unification of gravity and electromagnetism, the mass spectrum from dimensional reduction, the identification of forces with extra-dimensional geometry — while providing what Kaluza–Klein could not: a physical account of why the extra dimension exists, what it is doing, and why its effects are precisely what we observe as time, entropy, quantum uncertainty, and the constants of nature.

In the tradition of Newton (who unified terrestrial and celestial mechanics), Maxwell (who unified electricity, magnetism, and optics), and Einstein (who unified space and time), the McGucken Principle unifies gravity, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and the structure of time itself — from the single equation that Minkowski wrote in 1907 and that no one read as a dynamical statement for over a century:

The McGucken Principle

$dx_4/dt = ic$

The fourth dimension is a physical geometric axis advancing at rate ic. Everything else follows.

As Galileo said of the Earth: And yet it moves. The fourth dimension moves. McGucken read the equation that proved it.

Appendix A.  Reading the McGucken Principle in the Kaluza–Klein Setting: A Note on $dx_4/dt$, $dx_4/d\tau$, $v_{x_4}$, and the Photon — Clarifying Common Reader Misconceptions

About this appendix. Readers arriving at the McGucken Principle from a standard graduate-relativity background bring one deep habit: the reflex to treat per-proper-time quantities as the “physical” or “covariant” ones, and per-coordinate-time quantities as gauge-dependent bookkeeping. That habit points the wrong way here, because the Principle is a statement about the manifold itself — an expansion happening at every event, at the same rate, regardless of which worldline crosses that event. Readers arriving from Kaluza–Klein bring a second habit: the reflex to treat an extra dimension’s coordinate as a free degree of freedom along which fields may vary and momenta may run, which is exactly the reflex the five-slot accounting of §II.3 corrects. This appendix explains the four distinct $x_4$-rate quantities the paper uses, states which one is the Principle, reconciles the notation of the four-speed budget (7), reads the Kaluza–Klein correspondence of §V.8–§V.12 in the four quantities, and shows through six worked examples how photons, horizons, twins, GPS clocks, and the entangled pair of §V.4 all read naturally once the four quantities are kept in their proper roles. The apparatus is carried from Appendix A of the corpus Time paper [47] and re-anchored to the present paper.

A.0  The Physical Fact. Every quantity, rule, and check in this appendix descends from one physical fact: the fourth dimension $x_4$ is expanding in a spherically symmetric manner at the rate of c from every spacetime event, or $dx_4/dt = ic$ — as a wavefront whose oscillation carries the quantum of action h, with c the rate of the expansion and ℏ its action per oscillatory step (§V.6). That is the McGucken Principle, and its status must be stated plainly, because it is the point on which every reading in this appendix turns: $dx_4/dt = ic$ is an ontological claim — a statement about what physically is — and not a coordinate convention, a formal device, or a notational choice. It asserts that the fourth dimension is a real dimension that is really expanding, at the rate c, from every event of spacetime, now. The expansion is the physically primary fact. Minkowski spacetime is what the expansion looks like after its rate is integrated into the coordinate $x_4 = ict$ and squared into the Lorentzian metric $x_4^2 = -c^2 t^2$; the light cone is the locus the expanding wavefront traces; the metric, the causal order, the master equation (6), and the Schrödinger equation of §V.5 are all downstream of the one expansion. This is the reversal the reader must hold onto throughout, and it is the reversal on which the completion of Kaluza–Klein turns: standard physics takes the spacetime arena as a starting point and builds upon it — Kaluza–Klein went further and added a fifth coordinate to the arena — while here the arena is a result, generated by the expansion $dx_4/dt = ic$, with the fifth slot of the accounting identified as the expansion’s emergent parameter t (§II.3). The rate is prior; the worldlines that share in it, the metric that its squaring produces, and the observers that read it are all posterior. The imaginary unit i records the algebraic perpendicularity of the $x_4$-axis to the three spatial axes; its geometric realisation at each event is the McGucken Sphere — the spherical wavefront swept out around the event by the $x_4$-expansion. The Sphere is what distinguishes the Principle from Minkowski’s constant four-velocity norm $u^\mu u_\mu = -c^2$: the norm is a scalar constraint carrying no group action and no measure, and it survives here as equation (6), a theorem of the Principle — the chain-rule pullback of the Sphere’s expansion rate — while the Sphere itself carries the SO(3) symmetry of §V.10 and the geometry from which the corpus derives the Born rule by five convergent routes [47].

A.1  The Four $x_4$-Rate Quantities. The paper uses four related quantities associated with the fourth dimension’s advance. Each has its own symbol, its own domain of definition, and its own interpretation, and they diverge on null worldlines.

(R1) The coordinate rate $dx_4/dt = ic$. Parameter: coordinate t; range: fixed value ic; universal — holds at every event. This is the Principle, equations (1) and (5) of the body. With the integrated shadow $x_4 = ict$, this rate holds identically along every worldline — timelike, null, accelerated, at any gravitational potential — because $x_4$ is a coordinate function of t alone. Every statement about the universality of the expansion, its exception-freeness, and the cylinder-condition identity of §V.10 is a statement in (R1).

(R2) The Sphere-tangent velocity component $v_{x_4} \equiv \sqrt{c^2 – v^2}$ — the worldline’s share of the $x_4$-expansion, per coordinate time. Parameter: coordinate t; range: $[0, c]$; worldline-dependent, and bounded. The partition $v^2 + v_{x_4}^2 = c^2$ holds for every worldline, null ones included: at spatial rest $v_{x_4} = c$; on a null worldline $v = c$ gives $v_{x_4} = 0$. On timelike worldlines $v_{x_4}$ coincides with the standard time-dilation factor of special relativity: $v_{x_4} = c\,d\tau/dt = c/\gamma$ for $0 \le v < c$, with $\tau$ appearing as output rather than as the differentiation parameter. At $v = c$ all three expressions give $v_{x_4} = 0$. This quantity is the fourth term of the four-speed budget (7): in the body’s notation the budget is written with $(dx_4/dt)^2$ as its fourth term, and the quantity so written is the worldline’s share $v_{x_4}$ — the portion of the universal expansion the worldline retains after spatial motion — while the unqualified symbol $dx_4/dt$ of equations (1) and (5) is the manifold rate (R1). The budget partitions the share; the Principle legislates the rate. Statements about time dilation, the photon’s $x_4$-rest, the absent mass tower of §V.8, and horizons live in (R2).

(R3) The Lorentzian temporal component $u^4 = dx_4/d\tau = ic\gamma$. Parameter: proper $\tau$; unbounded, undefined on null worldlines; a chain-rule consequence of (R1): $dx_4/d\tau = (dx_4/dt)(dt/d\tau) = ic\gamma$. Its magnitude $c\gamma$ is unbounded as $v \to c$, and on a null worldline ($d\tau = 0$) the quantity is undefined — there the affinely parametrised null tangent replaces it. The four-velocity norm of equation (6), $u^\mu u_\mu = -c^2$, is the minus-sign identity of this quantity.

(R4) The accumulated $x_4$-advance along a worldline $\gamma$, $X_4[\gamma] \equiv \int_\gamma ic\,d\tau = ic\,\tau[\gamma]$. A worldline functional, path-dependent, distinct from the coordinate $x_4$. Two worldlines sharing endpoints share $\Delta x_4 = ic\,\Delta t$ but generally differ in $X_4$. Along a null worldline $X_4$ is constant; around any closed curve $\oint dx_4 = 0$ identically. Statements about differential ageing and about the $x_4$-coincidence of the McGucken Equivalence (§V.4) live in (R4). The bridge to (R2): $dX_4 = ic\,d\tau = i\,v_{x_4}\,dt$.

A.2  Which One Is the Principle. The Principle is $dx_4/dt = ic$: the coordinate-time reading (R1). Because $x_4$ is a coordinate function of t alone, the rate $dx_4/dt$ takes the same value ic at every event — an event on a photon worldline, a horizon event, an event on any accelerated worldline. The reading $dx_4/d\tau = ic$ is available too, but only where $d\tau = dt$: on a worldline at spatial rest, the chain rule collapses and (R1) coincides with the value of (R3). This is the rest-frame reverse-reading equivalence, and the qualification $d\tau = dt$ is what makes it valid. On a moving worldline the chain rule gives $ic\gamma$; on a null worldline the quantity does not exist. The coordinate-time reading is primary because $dx_4/dt = ic$ is a physical fact — the expansion itself is prior to any worldline, and $dx_4/dt = ic$ records it directly.

A.3  Reading the Photon, the Horizon, and the Time-Dilation Formula.

A.3.1. What is the photon’s $x_4$-rate? The photon’s share in the expansion is zero: $v_{x_4} = 0$, the $v = c$ limit of the partition, obtained by direct substitution into $v_{x_4} = \sqrt{c^2 – v^2}$. The photon is at rest in $x_4$ — Absolute rest in $x_4$, exactly as §IV.2 and §V.4 of the body state. The reader may be tempted to write “$dx_4/dt = 0$ for the photon” or “$dx_4/d\tau = 0$.” Neither is available. The first is the coordinate rate (R1), which is ic at every event including the photon’s — what vanishes is the photon’s share, never the expansion. The second is 0/0: proper time is not defined for a photon. The correct statement is the share $v_{x_4} = 0$, so $X_4$ does not accumulate, so the photon ages not at all, while the Principle continues to hold at every event the photon crosses — which is the precise content of §V.4’s sentence that photons do not advance along $x_4$ while $dx_4/dt = ic$ continues to hold at every event of the worldline.

A.3.2. What does “the $x_4$-rate at the horizon” mean? The rate is gravity-rigid: $\partial(dx_4/dt)/\partial g_{\mu\nu} = 0$ [47]. The rate $dx_4/dt = ic$ takes the same value near the horizon as at infinity. What varies with potential is the share: $v_{x_4}(r) = c\,d\tau/dt = c\sqrt{1 – r_s/r}$ for the static Schwarzschild observer, vanishing at $r = r_s$. On the infaller’s own clock $d\tau = dt$ locally and the reverse-reading equivalence applies: the local rate is the full ic throughout. Gravitational time dilation is the coordinate-frame projection of a locally invariant rate — the reading §VI of the body gives in prose.

A.3.3. Which identity is “$c^2$ through spacetime”? The Sphere partition (per coordinate time, all worldlines): $v^2 + v_{x_4}^2 = c^2$ — equation (7) — bounded, its locus a quarter-circle. The Lorentzian four-velocity norm (per proper time, massive worldlines): $u^\mu u_\mu = -c^2$ — equation (6) — unbounded in each term, the signature difference fixing the invariant. The Euclidean per-proper-time sum equals $c^2$ only in the instantaneous rest frame; elsewhere $c^2\gamma^2$. Plus-sign identities belong to (R2); minus-sign identities to (R3).

A.3.4. How does the twin paradox read? Coordinate accumulation is path-independent: both twins accumulate $\Delta x_4 = ic\,\Delta t$. Differential ageing is read from $X_4 = \int ic\,d\tau$, advancing at real magnitude $v_{x_4}$ per unit coordinate time. On the traveling leg $v_{x_4} < c$, so the traveler accumulates less $X_4$, so less proper time. The closed-timelike-curve question closes the same way: $\oint dx_4 = 0$ identically, so such a curve cannot run on the coordinate; the impossibility lives in $X_4$.

A.3.5. $\gamma$-projection and rapidity. A boost is hyperbolic: rapidity $\varphi$ with $\cosh\varphi = \gamma$. The Sphere-partition projection is circular: Sphere angle $\theta$ with $\sin\theta = v/c$, $\cos\theta = v_{x_4}/c = 1/\gamma$. The two are related by the Gudermannian, $\theta = \mathrm{gd}(\varphi)$, so $\cos\theta = \mathrm{sech}\,\varphi$. The $1/\gamma$ projection is about $\theta$; unbounded component growth is about $\varphi$.

A.4  The Four Quantities in the Kaluza–Klein Correspondence. The McGucken Principle $dx_4/dt = ic$ states the physical reality that the fourth dimension is expanding at the rate c from every spacetime point, as a wavefront whose oscillation carries the quantum of action h — and the four-quantity apparatus is what keeps the five-slot correspondence of §II.3 exact. The reified fifth slot is (R1)’s integral: Kaluza–Klein took the integrated shadow $x_4 = ict$, read its parameter t as a coordinate, and promoted that parameter to a static axis — which is why the cylinder-condition identity of §V.10 is an (R1) statement, $t = x_4/(ic)$ leaving no independent fifth variable. The absent mass tower of §V.8 is an (R2) statement: Kaluza–Klein’s $p_5$ was a free, unbounded momentum with one predicted particle per integer, while the share $v_{x_4}$ is bounded in $[0, c]$ and fully determined by the budget (7) — a dimension whose rate is legislated carries no rung index. The one-tick Sphere of §V.11 lives in (R1)’s tick structure: the increment $\Delta r = c\,t_P = \ell_P$ is rate times tick, universal because (R1) is. And the McGucken Equivalence of §V.4 is an (R2)-and-(R4) statement with (R1) intact throughout, as worked example A.5.6 computes. Kaluza–Klein’s single fifth velocity, forced to carry both charge and mass (§V.13), had no such division of roles available: one coordinate’s one derivative carried everything, which is why the electron’s charge-to-mass ratio broke it. The four quantities are the McGucken $dx_4/dt = ic$ framework’s division of that labour — the manifold rate, the worldline share, the proper-time component, and the accumulated advance, each doing one job.

A.5  Worked Examples.

A.5.1. The twin paradox. Traveler at speed v for coordinate time $\Delta t$. Coordinate accumulation: $\Delta x_4 = ic\,\Delta t$ for both. Traveler’s share: $v_{x_4} = c\sqrt{1 – v^2/c^2}$. Accumulated: $\Delta X_4^{\mathrm{trav}} = ic\sqrt{1 – v^2/c^2}\,\Delta t$ against $\Delta X_4^{\mathrm{stay}} = ic\,\Delta t$. Differential ageing: $\Delta\tau_{\mathrm{trav}} – \Delta\tau_{\mathrm{stay}} = \Delta t(\sqrt{1 – v^2/c^2} – 1) < 0$ — the traveler is younger by exactly the Lorentz factor.

A.5.2. GPS clock rate. Satellite at radius r, speed v, central mass M. Principle: $dx_4/dt = ic$. Gravitational share: $v_{x_4}^{\mathrm{grav}}/c = \sqrt{1 – 2GM/rc^2}$; kinematic factor $\sqrt{1 – v^2/c^2}$. Total: $v_{x_4}^{\mathrm{sat}}/c \approx 1 – GM/(rc^2) – v^2/(2c^2)$; ground: $\approx 1 – GM/(R_\oplus c^2)$. Fractional difference $\approx GM(1/R_\oplus – 1/r) – v^2/(2c^2)$, matching the $+4.5 \times 10^{-10}$ pre-launch offset at $r = 26{,}600$ km, $v = 3.87$ km/s.

A.5.3. Schwarzschild gravitational redshift. Photon from $r_1$ to $r_2 > r_1$. Principle: $dx_4/dt = ic$. Local clock rate: $v_{x_4}(r)/c = \sqrt{1 – r_s/r}$. Frequency ratio $\nu_2/\nu_1 = \sqrt{(1 – r_s/r_1)/(1 – r_s/r_2)}$; weak-field $\Delta\nu/\nu \approx -GM(1/r_2 – 1/r_1)/c^2$, matching Pound–Rebka 1959. The photon carries $v_{x_4} = 0$ throughout and accumulates no $X_4$; the redshift is about the clock rates at emitter and receiver, never about the photon.

A.5.4. Hawking temperature. At $r = r_s$ the local share $v_{x_4}(r) \to 0$. Surface gravity $\kappa = c/(2r_s)$; compactification circumference $L_H = 4\pi r_s = c\hbar\beta_H$; temperature $T_H = \hbar c^3/(8\pi G M k_B)$. The expansion does not stop at the horizon; the share is extinguished on the static foliation, and compactification of the Euclidean-section $x_4$-axis at $L_H$ produces the thermal spectrum [47].

A.5.5. Bell’s spaceships. Rockets A and B at proper distance $L_0$, accelerating identically. Coordinate rate: $dx_4/dt = ic$. Share: $v_{x_4}(t) = c\sqrt{1 – v(t)^2/c^2}$, decreasing. Accumulated: $X_4^A = X_4^B$, so both age identically. Launch-frame separation constant at $L_0$; co-moving separation $L(t) = L_0\,c/v_{x_4}(t)$, growing without bound. The string breaks because the budget shifts into the spatial sector identically on each rocket; the paradox lives in the spatial-sector geometry.

A.5.6. The entangled photon pair of §V.4. Photons A and B sourced at a common event, flying apart. Coordinate accumulation, path-independent in (R1): $\Delta x_4 = ic\,\Delta t$ for both, equal at every t. Shares, in (R2): $v_{x_4}^A = v_{x_4}^B = 0$ — Absolute rest in $x_4$ for each. Accumulated advance, in (R4): $X_4^A = X_4^B = 0$ at all times, so $X_4^A – X_4^B = 0$ exactly, at every spatial separation. The $x_4$-coincidence of the McGucken Equivalence is therefore exact in both registers — equal coordinate accumulation and equal, vanishing, worldline accumulation — while the Principle (R1) holds at every event either photon crosses. The coincidence is selective in exactly the sense §V.4 requires: a massive pair at rest would accumulate $X_4 = ic\,\Delta t$ each, and a massive–null pair would differ, so $\Delta X_4 = 0$ with zero shares is the geometric signature of a null pair from a common event.

A.6  Anchor Table. The definitions and results this appendix refers to are anchored as follows: the Principle (R1) at equations (1) and (5); the four-speed budget — the Sphere partition carrying the share (R2) — at equation (7); the four-velocity norm, the minus-sign identity of (R3), at equation (6); the photon at Absolute rest in $x_4$ at §IV.2 and §V.4; the McGucken Equivalence and the null interval (9) at §V.4; the cylinder-condition identity at §V.10; the one-tick Sphere at §V.11; the five-slot correspondence and the reified parameter at §II.3; the gravitational-time-dilation reading at §VI and §V.7; and, in the corpus, the gravity-rigidity of the rate, the McGucken Cloaking Theorem on the local undetectability of the foliation bookkeeping, the CMB rest-frame identification, and the five convergent Born-rule derivations at the Time paper [47], with the Born geometry and the measurement resolution at [25].
