Abstract

This document provides the first comprehensive chronological record of Dr. Elliot McGucken’s theory of the physically expanding fourth dimension — the idea that Minkowski’s coordinate x4 = ict is not a notational convenience but a genuine geometric axis advancing at the invariant rate dx4/dt = ic. The theory originated in McGucken’s dissertation research at Princeton University under John Archibald Wheeler in the late 1980s and 1990s, was first committed to writing in a dissertation appendix at UNC Chapel Hill in 1998–1999, appeared on early internet physics forums around 2003–2004 under the name Moving Dimensions Theory (MDT), spread aggressively through Usenet newsgroups from 2004–2006, received its first formal paper at the Foundational Questions Institute (FQXi) in August 2008, evolved through the naming variants MDT, DDT, and LTD Theory, and arrived at its final form as the McGucken Principle in 2016–2026. Every platform, paper, key term, and name-change is documented in sequence, drawn from archived forum posts, Google Groups Usenet records, FQXi essay contest archives, Blogspot timestamps, science forum records, and McGucken’s own publications.

Era I  —  The Princeton Origin  —  Late 1980s to 1999

c. 1989–1993  —  Undergraduate Work with John Archibald Wheeler, Princeton University

The intellectual origins of the McGucken Principle trace directly to McGucken’s undergraduate years at Princeton University, where he worked closely with John Archibald Wheeler — student of Bohr, teacher of Feynman, close colleague of Einstein, and the last great figure of the heroic age of physics. Wheeler wrote of McGucken in his graduate school recommendation letter:

“More intellectual curiosity, versatility and yen for physics than Elliot McGucken’s I have never seen in any senior or graduate student. Originality, powerful motivation, and a can-do spirit make me think that McGucken is a top bet for graduate school in physics. I gave him as an independent task to figure out the time factor in the standard Schwarzschild expression around a spherically-symmetric center of attraction… He could and did, and wrote it all up in a beautifully clear account. His second junior paper, entitled ‘Within a Context,’ dealt with an entirely different part of physics, the Einstein–Rosen–Podolsky experiment and delayed choice experiments in general… this paper was so outstanding. I am absolutely delighted that this semester McGucken is doing a project with the cyclotron group on time reversal asymmetry.”

— John Archibald Wheeler, Princeton University, Recommendation for Elliot McGucken for Admission to Graduate School of Physics

Two undergraduate research projects with Wheeler planted the seeds of all that followed. The first — independently deriving the time factor in the Schwarzschild metric using “poor man’s reasoning” from Wheeler’s own geometry — is the direct conceptual ancestor of the gravitational time dilation argument later derived from dx4/dt = ic: invariant x4 expansion meeting stretched spatial geometry near a mass. The second — on the EPR paradox and delayed-choice experiments — is the ancestor of the McGucken Equivalence for quantum entanglement. Wheeler also introduced McGucken to his booklet “It from Bit,” engraved with a quantum black hole, which shaped McGucken’s conviction that information and geometry are unified at the deepest level. Wheeler’s injunction — “Today’s physics lacks the Noble, and it’s your generation’s duty to bring it back” — became the motto of McGucken’s entire subsequent research program.

1998–1999  —  The Doctoral Dissertation, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

McGucken completed his Ph.D. at UNC Chapel Hill. The primary dissertation topic was the Multiple Unit Artificial Retina Chipset (MARC) to Aid the Visually Impaired — an NSF-funded biomedical engineering project that received a Merrill Lynch Innovations Grant, coverage in Business Week and Popular Science, and which subsequently helped blind patients see. This work has nothing to do with the physics theory. What matters here is the appendix.

The dissertation contains an appendix treating time as an emergent phenomenon. Drawing from the Wheeler collaborations on the Schwarzschild time factor and the EPR paradox, and from Minkowski’s coordinate x4 = ict, the appendix proposes that time is not the fourth dimension itself but an emergent property arising because the fourth dimension is physically expanding relative to the three spatial dimensions. The equation dx4/dt = ic — obtained by direct differentiation of Minkowski’s own notation — is the mathematical core of this appendix. This is the earliest written record of the McGucken Principle, predating all internet publications by nearly a decade.

Era II  —  First Internet Deployments  —  2003–2006

c. 2003–2004  —  PhysicsForums.com  —  Member #3753

McGucken’s earliest confirmed internet presence is on PhysicsForums.com. His member number was 3753 — a low registration number placing him among the site’s early users, consistent with joining around 2003. He posted under his own name, advancing the ideas of a fourth expanding dimension and the physical interpretation of x4 = ict as yielding dx4/dt = ic. The theory was already being called Moving Dimensions Theory.

The posts drew resistance. A moderator named Warren informed McGucken: “This forum is dedicated to current theories which are widely accepted by the physics community. While I cannot say anything about the veracity of MDT, it is not considered mainstream, and thus is not welcome in the general forums. You are welcome to post it in the Independent Research forum.” Following this, McGucken set up physicsmathforums.com as his own competing venue. The original PhysicsForums posts are no longer accessible, but their existence and the moderator response are documented in a 2006 PhysicsForums thread discussing McGucken’s departure.

2004  —  Usenet: sci.physics and sci.physics.relativity  —  Earliest MDT Mentions

The year 2004 marks the earliest documented Usenet appearances. McGucken began posting to the physics newsgroups sci.physics and sci.physics.relativity — the oldest and most prestigious physics discussion networks on the internet, predating the web itself. Key developments this year:

  • The phrase “The Fourth Moving Dimension” appears for the first time in Usenet threads, before the MDT acronym was standardized.
  • McGucken begins arguing explicitly that the expansion of the fourth dimension is the physical cause of the constant velocity of light — not a postulate but a consequence of geometry.
  • The light-cone relationship x = ct is framed as the surface swept out by x4’s expansion: photons “surf” this expanding surface, remaining stationary in x4 while moving at c through the three spatial dimensions.
  • The first explicit argument that Einstein’s relativity, rather than being a set of postulates, can be derived from the single physical fact of x4’s expansion.

2005  —  Usenet: Systematic Posting of dx4/dt = ic

2005 is when the equation dx4/dt = ic first appears systematically in Usenet posts on sci.physics.relativity. The central argument, repeated across many threads:

  • Einstein and Minkowski utilized the relationship x4 = ict mathematically, but treated it as a notational convenience with no independent physical meaning.
  • Differentiating gives dx4/dt = ic — which McGucken argues is not a mathematical identity but a physical equation of motion: x4 is genuinely advancing at rate ic.
  • This single physical fact, McGucken argues, is the “elementary foundation” that Einstein himself said he was seeking for relativity: a deeper physical reality from which the postulates of relativity follow as theorems rather than axioms.
  • Quantum nonlocality first appears as a consequence: a photon that does not advance in x4 from emission to absorption remains locally coincident in x4 regardless of spatial separation.

2006  —  Usenet: MDT and DDT Standardized; Quantum Nonlocality Developed

By 2006 the two primary acronyms for the theory are in place:

  • MDT (Moving Dimensions Theory) — the standard name, emphasizing the physical motion of the fourth dimension.
  • DDT (Dynamic Dimensions Theory) — an alternative name used in some threads, emphasizing that the dimension is dynamically active rather than static.

McGucken intensifies the quantum nonlocality argument this year. The key claim, now stated with precision: a photon remains stationary in x4 while x4 itself expands at c spherically around the emission event. Two entangled photons created at a common origin therefore share an x4 coordinate permanently, because neither advances in x4. Their spatial separation grows; their x4 separation remains null. This, McGucken argues, is the physical mechanism behind Bell-inequality violations and the EPR paradox — the hidden variable Einstein sought was x4 itself.

This year also sees the most sustained critique of string theory and LQG in McGucken’s Usenet posts, quoting Nobel Laureates Feynman, Glashow, Laughlin, Gross, and ’t Hooft on string theory’s failures, and contrasting MDT’s single-postulate simplicity with string theory’s “not even wrongishness.” The physicsmathforums.com community serves as a parallel venue for these discussions.

Era III  —  The Heroic Age of Forum Debates  —  2007–2012

April 2007  —  45physics.blogspot.com  —  First Dated Public Post

The oldest directly timestamped public document of MDT is a Blogspot post dated April 18, 2007 at 45physics.blogspot.com, titled “Moving Dimensions Theory Vs. String Theory & LQG.” The blog’s title, “45 Physics: Calling String Theory’s Bluff,” signals its combative positioning. The post states the MDT postulate in full:

“The fourth dimension is expanding relative to the three spatial dimensions. A photon is momenergy that exists orthogonal to the three spatial dimensions. It is carried along by the expanding fourth dimension. So no matter how fast the source is moving when the photon is emitted, the photon travels at the rate with which the fourth dimension is expanding relative to the three spatial dimensions.”

The post lists MDT’s claimed scope — relativity, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, Kaluza-Klein — and already references a CafePress t-shirt at cafepress.com/autumnrangers featuring the MDT equation, indicating that commercial promotion of the theory had been underway for some time prior to the April 2007 timestamp. A Kaluza-Klein entry is explicit: “A fourth expanding dimension can be interpreted as many dimensions, each time it expands” — McGucken already situating MDT as a resolution of the Kaluza-Klein compactification problem.

August 25, 2008  —  FQXi Essay Contest  —  First Formal Paper

The pivotal date in the public history of MDT/LTD Theory is August 25, 2008: the submission of McGucken’s first formal paper to the Foundational Questions Institute (FQXi) essay contest, at fqxi.org/community/forum/topic/238. The paper is titled:

“Time as an Emergent Phenomenon: Traveling Back to the Heroic Age of Physics (In Memory of John Archibald Wheeler)”

This is the first peer-visible, formally documented, indexed statement of the theory. Its abstract states the complete MDT argument in one paragraph, including the central equation, the derivation of relativity, the treatment of entanglement, and the dismissal of the block universe. The term Light Time Dimension Theory (LTD) begins to appear alongside MDT in the FQXi forum discussions surrounding this paper, marking the first formal use of the LTD name. The paper also appeared on scienceforums.com’s Strange Claims Forum on October 22, 2008, under the title “Moving Dimensions Theory.”

September 16, 2009  —  FQXi Second Paper  —  MDT Named Formally

McGucken’s second FQXi paper, submitted September 16, 2009, is the first to use Moving Dimensions Theory as an explicit, formal name in a paper title: “What is Ultimately Possible in Physics? Physics! A Hero’s Journey with Galileo, Newton, Faraday, Maxwell, Planck, Einstein, Schrödinger, Bohr, and the Greats towards Moving Dimensions Theory. E pur si muove!” (fqxi.org/community/forum/topic/511). The “E pur si muove” — Galileo’s legendary whispered defiance, “And yet it moves” — became McGucken’s motto for MDT, connecting the unrecognized motion of the fourth dimension to Galileo’s unrecognized motion of the Earth.

January 2, 2010  —  Usenet Return: sci.physics.relativity

On January 2, 2010, McGucken posted a full-length MDT exposition to the Usenet newsgroup sci.physics.relativity via Google Groups, under the account “Moving Dimensions Theory: dx4/dt=ic.” The post announced that MDT was “catching on all over the world” and quoted a Slovak physics forum’s positive discussion: “Elliot McGucken pulled from this the simple conclusion that dx4/dt = ic, therefore that the fourth dimension is moving relative to the other three dimensions at the speed of light, and that time is only an emergent physical phenomenon.”

The Usenet responses were hostile: one veteran poster called it “1440 lines of crap” and another reported it as spam. This reception was typical of unsolicited alternative physics on Usenet, but the post itself is a complete, fully referenced statement of MDT and is archived in Google Groups’ historical Usenet record.

2010–2012  —  FQXi Papers Three, Four, and Five  —  Refinement of Discrete x4

Three further papers were submitted to FQXi between 2010 and 2012, completing McGucken’s five foundational papers on LTD Theory:

  • 2010: “On the Emergence of QM, Relativity, Entropy, Time, iℏ, and ic” — extending the framework to derive the Schrödinger equation’s imaginary unit from dx4/dt = ic.
  • 2012: “MDT’s dx4/dt=ic Triumphs Over the Wrong Physical Assumption That Time Is a Dimension” — the most polemical paper, directly arguing that the standard conflation of time with the fourth dimension has generated all of modern physics’ paradoxes.
  • 2013: “Where is the Wisdom We Have Lost in Information? Returning Wheeler’s Honor and Philo-Sophy to Physics” — a tribute to Wheeler framing MDT as the fulfilment of Wheeler’s programme.

This period also sees the introduction of the discrete / digital character of x4: while the three spatial dimensions are continuous (analog), McGucken argues that x4’s expansion is fundamentally discrete (digital) at the Planck scale, advancing in increments of the Planck length lP. This connects MDT to the Planck scale and provides a candidate mechanism for the quantisation of physics — later developed into the derivation of Planck’s constant h as the quantum of x4’s oscillation.

Era IV  —  Books, Branding, and the McGucken Principle  —  2013–2026

2013–2016  —  Book Publications and LTD Theory Consolidation

McGucken begins publishing MDT/LTD Theory as a series of books under his 45EPIC Hero’s Odyssey Mythology Press imprint. The copyright date of 2016 appears on the early book editions, marking the consolidation of the theory under the Light Time Dimension Theory brand. The books present LTD Theory as a complete physical framework unifying relativity, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and time, illustrated with McGucken’s fine art landscape photography. The equation dx4/dt = ic appears on clothing, surfboards, and artwork from the 45SURF brand — McGucken signs all his art with the equation.

2017  —  Steemit; LTD Book Announced

McGucken’s LTD Theory book, Light Time Dimension Theory: The Foundational Physics Unifying Einstein’s Relativity and Quantum Mechanics: A Simple, Illustrated Introduction, is announced and promoted on Steemit in September 2017, reaching a new audience on the blockchain-based social platform.

2019  —  WordPress Blogs: elliotmcgucken.home.blog

McGucken establishes a WordPress blog at elliotmcgucken.home.blog in November 2019, posting the full McGucken Principle and Proof. The McGucken Sphere — the spherical surface of radius R = ct swept out by x4’s expansion from any event — is named and defined here as the geometric object unifying Huygens’ wavelets, Feynman’s path integrals, and quantum entanglement.

2020  —  Medium: goldennumberratio.medium.com

McGucken expands to Medium, publishing a series of long-form posts presenting the McGucken Principle to a broader public audience. These posts introduce the full six-step McGucken Proof (see below), develop the McGucken Equivalence for quantum entanglement, and situate the theory within the history of physics from Newton and Maxwell to Einstein and Wheeler.

2025–2026  —  elliotmcguckenphysics.com  —  The Current Platform

McGucken’s primary platform from 2025 onward is elliotmcguckenphysics.com on WordPress.com. April 2026 sees an intensive publication programme: formal papers deriving Newton’s inverse square law, the Schrödinger equation, the uncertainty principle, the values of c and h, and the resolution of the twin paradox, all from the single postulate dx4/dt = ic. The five foundational FQXi papers (2008–2013) are also republished and contextualized here.

The McGucken Proof  —  Formalized c. 2008, Present in Embryo from 2004

The logical core of MDT/LTD Theory, repeated across every platform from Usenet to FQXi to Medium to WordPress, is the following six-step proof. The earliest embryonic form (steps 1–3) appears in Usenet posts around 2004–2005. The complete six-step formalization appears in the 2008 FQXi paper and has remained unchanged:

The McGucken Proof — Six Steps

  1. The magnitude of the velocity of every object through the four dimensions of spacetime is c.
  2. The faster an object moves through the three spatial dimensions, the slower it moves through the fourth dimension.
  3. As an object’s velocity approaches c through the three spatial dimensions, its velocity through the fourth dimension must approach zero.
  4. Therefore light remains stationary in the fourth dimension x4.
  5. Thus photons of light track and trace the movement and character of x4.
  6. As light is a spherically-symmetric, probabilistic wavefront expanding at cx4 expands at the rate c in a spherically-symmetric manner, distributing locality into nonlocality. QED: dx4/dt = ic

Proof #2 (algebraic): Einstein and Minkowski wrote x4 = ict. Differentiating: dx4/dt = icQED.
Proof #3 (logical): The only way to stay stationary in the three spatial dimensions is to move at c through the fourth dimension. The only way to stay stationary in the fourth dimension is to move at c through the three spatial dimensions. Therefore the fourth dimension is moving at c relative to the three spatial dimensions. QED.

What the History Establishes

Reading across the full chronological record, several things are clear.

The theory’s core has been stable since 1998. The dissertation appendix, the 2004 Usenet posts, the 2007 blogspot post, the 2008 FQXi paper, and the 2026 WordPress papers all turn on the same single equation — dx4/dt = ic — and the same single physical claim: x4 is a genuine geometric axis advancing at rate ic, not a notational synonym for time. Everything else — the derivations of relativity, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, Newton’s law, the Schrödinger equation, quantum entanglement, and the values of the fundamental constants — is a consequence of this one postulate, elaborated in increasing detail over nearly three decades.

The internet hostility was consistent and predictable. PhysicsForums restricted and then effectively expelled MDT. Usenet users called it “crap” and reported it as spam. Science forums filed it under “Strange Claims.” This reception reflects the standard treatment of any unaffiliated, non-peer-reviewed physical theory on public forums, regardless of its content. It does not constitute engagement with the physics.

The theory was engaging Kaluza-Klein explicitly from the beginning. As early as the 2007 blogspot post, McGucken addresses Kaluza-Klein directly, arguing that MDT’s expanding fourth dimension provides what Kaluza-Klein needed — a physical character for the extra dimension — without requiring compactification. The McGucken Principle does not add dimensions; it identifies what the dimension that has been in the equations since 1907 is actually doing.

Wheeler’s influence is pervasive and genuine. The two Princeton research projects — the Schwarzschild time factor and the EPR experiment — are precisely the physical problems that MDT/LTD Theory addresses. The gravitational time dilation argument (invariant x4 expansion in stretched space) solves the first. The McGucken Equivalence (photons sharing an x4 coordinate) solves the second. Wheeler’s call to “bring the Noble back to physics” is the explicit motivation for the entire enterprise.
